Why are black dresses more popular in modern times rather than the old fashioned hues? In fashion, colours symbolise many different things. They can represent an emotion or a particular mood. They can also represent the personality of a person. If a person wears a colour very often, his or her personality traits are said to be representative of what that colour represents. A person wearing blue always will have characteristics of calmness, serenity and peace as it is the colour of a clear sky and the sea. Pink would signify kindness and compassion, a person wearing pink usually is empathetic and kind. These are lighter colours and often associated with casual wear. Darker colours are now more fashionable and represent perceptions sought after in modern times. So what would a dark or black dress represent? Over the ages black has been a colour symbolising evil and the wicked. It used to be the colour of witches and those that cause harm to society. Then it continued to represent robbers, robbing in the dark and thereafter people who had closed personalities, wishing to reveal less of them. Continually it used to represent negativity and also sadness. It is a colour worn at funerals and sad events even from Victorian times. Still it is a colour worn by people who want society to ignore them or for their eyes to move past them unnoticed. The Black dress, since it was introduced in the 1920’s by its creator Coco Chanel, now represents something totally different.Fashion experts now say black is no more a colour solely representing negativity. Black dresses can represent elegance and authority. It is a rather chic colour that is now a necessity to the wardrobe of every woman deemednow as an essential item. So why are black dresses so important? What about brown dresses and other dark colours like purple? Why aren’t they the ultimate choice? Again, it comes back to the characteristics of your personality they represent. Purple represents royalty and luxury, a perception people would love others to have, but it is not something people have, it is only an aspiration, a dream. With black dresses however, the attributes of authority and respect can be gained easily, unlike luxury and royalty. Black dresses can also be easily matched with other accessories to give a complete look. It is the ultimate colour. Black dresses are becoming an emerging trend because of these reasons and it will most probably be the colour of the next decade.
