I had this idea when writing in my journal one day. I do believe writing is very powerful, whether only for yourself, others or both. But how about this?...write yourself a letter. Why should your diary or journal get all the attention? Let your salutations be creative. 'Dear' is okay, but how about using more engaging words, add an adjective that either expresses your mood or demeanor that day, or use comforting, supportive words - whatever you need to hear. For instance, on an especially humorous day I wrote a salutation to the effect of - Hey, Barb - you crazy kid you.' Then I just starting writing down the funny things that I did that day, and I made it personal by adding phrases like, ' you cracked me up' when you said such and such.' and... 'Girl you are so funny!' ' I soooo get your humor, I LMAO!' Now, don't call me crazy yet...try it first and then you can get back to me. On another day, feeling rather blah, I wrote myself the sweetest little letter I have ever received. I started off by saying things like, 'It bothers me to see you blue.', 'Hey sparkle, come on,! 'Your fans are getting rowdy,' 'Come on let's see that gorgeous smile of yours.' It's amazing what this little 'self serving' writing can do. You know how we've been flooded with the 'think positive' material, the 'trash in trash out', 'think happy thoughts, 'believe it to achieve it.'...there's a million. Well, I'm here to tell you that nothing is more powerful than actually writing these words and then reading them in a letter to you! This double process and the effect on you is extremely, positively, extraordinary! Smack a stamp on it and mail it to yourself...yes I'm serious. By the time it is delivered to you, you probably will have a whole different view of the letter, and now it will have become a triple process, possibly taking on a whole new life of it's own...containing powers of its' own...creating a phenomena...well, my goodness...it's practically illegal ! What fun! You may need or want to compliment yourself, console yourself, motivate yourself, even reprimand yourself, (tenderly of course) organize thoughts, help indecisiveness... anything goes! My advice is just let it flow, don't get too serious about proper grammar, punctuation and so on. Just write a nice little letter to your best friend - YOU! Maybe you're not even liking yourself that day. In that case you definitely need to write it! Often you will find that you do not need to write a lot, after a few sentences it has already done it's 'job,' and primarily that is to replace thoughts with words, to clear your mind, to build your self-esteem, to help heal a hurt to relive a moment, a memory, or 'trouble shoot' a situation, or just plain feel good. Obviously the list is endless, so there is never a shortage of writing material. The dialogues that are stampeding through your mind at any given moment take a little rest. The 'sneaky' little negative 'pop-ups, the redundant energy drainers, the vicious mood snatchers...are on hiatus. You are not only catching a nice little break, you are restoring your spirit as well. Of course we 'writers' get to escape into word land be it in the form of creativity, fantasy, information, explanation, motivation...that's all well and good. However, this 'self' letter is more than that. Like I said a few sentences ago, it just feels really good. It is good. It reminds you to love yourself, and treat yourself to the same kindness you would show to others. Compliments, understanding, honesty, encouragement, support, compassion, laughter and love. I hope you will gift yourself with your beautiful words, words that you can read time again if you desire, because unlike verbiage and thoughts, the written word holds much more power. In addition you have options - keep your letters, discard them, share them, display them on the frig...it's your choice. I went all the way, I turned them into a book, " Self Portrait in Words." P.S.
