Baycol is the trade name of an oral drug cerivastatin. In 1990 by Bayer A.G. a pharmaceutical company first marketed Cerivastatin in competition to Pfizer’s atrovastin. It was initially approved in the U.S in 1997; however, later rhabdomyolysis was reported as the fatal side effect of the drug, and by 2001, this medicine was withdrawn from all over the world. Baycol is basically used to bring down the blood cholesterol levels. It belongs to the class of satins that lower the bad cholesterol levels, triglycerides- which is another type of fat and apolipoprotien B thereby preventing heart diseases. It does this by increasing the production of good cholesterol called high density lipoproteins (HDL). Increased HDL in turn helps in controlling the hardening of arteries which can lead to either heart attacks or cardiac arrests or heart failure or any other heart ailment. Thus baycol lowers the risk of artery clogging by decreasing the content of low density lipoproteins or the bad cholesterol and increasing high density lipoproteins or good cholesterol. DO’s and DON’Ts of the DRUG: DO’s:- Take the dose only as directed by the physician. It is indeed very important to do as directed, so if the instructions of the dosage are not clear, ensure that the practitioner explains them to you clearly. Baycol should preferably be taken with a full glass of water. Low- fat and low- cholesterol diet should be maintained during Baycol’s course. The medicine has shown its best results with patients adhering to non- fatty, low cholesterol food. Liver functioning should be strictly monitored before starting and after administering the drug. Blood tests should be done before starting the medicine, at six to twelve weeks after taking the medicine, again after any alternations in the dosage, and periodically after every six months once the dosage is set. DON’Ts:- 1. Consume or discontinue the medicine without consulting your practitioner. Eat fatty and high cholesterol food during the course of the medicine. Baycol’s works best with a combination of non- fatty, low cholesterol food, so to get the maximum benefit of the medicine, the patient should constrain his/ her diet to non fatty food. Alcohol and Baycol together can cause severe liver damage. In case alcohol is unavoidable, then the exact amount consumed should be discussed with the physician, so that Baycol’s suitability and dosage can be determined accordingly Grapefruit and grapefruit juice are other food items to be avoided with Baycol. They may interact with the drug and cause some serious side effects. Also, if Baycol’s dosage has been set keeping an amount of grapefruit and/ or grapefruit juice in consideration, then the amounts of the same should not be altered without discussing with the doctor. The following medicines can cause fatal and serious health issues if used in combination with Baycol. So do mention to the doctor if you are already taking any of the below mentioned drugs: Cyclosporine Gemfibrozil, clofibrate orfinofibrate Niacin Erthromycin or clarithromycin Itraconazole or flucanozole or ketoconazole People suffering from malfunctioning of kidneys or with muscle disorders or suffering from seizures or epilepsy should also avoid this medicine. Population of elderly people or people using Baycol in combination with gemfibrozil, is the population at higher risk to suffer from the side effects of the drug. Baycol’s effect finishes the moment it is stopped. So the cholesterol levels may rise up to pre- Baycol levels after the medication is discontinued.
