Summer In Snowdonia: Ten Festivals And Carnivals For Summer 2012

Travel & Tourism
Every summer in Snowdonia, there are always plenty of festivals and carnivals to enjoy. With the stunning backdrop of majestic mountains and rugged coastline, and lush green countryside stretching as far as the eye can see, there are few better places to enjoy a festival than in Snowdonia.

With summer already putting in an appearance in Snowdonia over the past few days, there's no better time to tell you about ten unmissable festivals and carnivals to attend in Snowdonia over the next few months.

1. Kaya: 1-3 June, Faenol Estate

Kaya is a global World Music festival where revellers will enjoy a great mix of African, Jamaican, Caribbean and World musical flavours along with a diverse range of workshops, food stalls and festival activities. Kaya is held at the Faenol (Vaynol) Estate, just outside Bangor.

2. Eisteddfod yr Urdd: 4-9 June, Glynllifon

Wales' most talented children come together at Eisteddfod yr Urdd to compete against each other in performances of music, dance, drama and poetry, as well as sporting events, in the biggest event of the year in any Welsh child's calendar! This year, Eisteddfod yr Urdd is held at Glynllifon, just outside Caernarfon. Between performances you'll be able to see exhibitions and visit a number of trade stands throughout the Maes (Eisteddfod field) - or take the opportunity to see some other local attractions, like Dinas Dinlle which is a 5-10 minute drive from Glynllifon.

3. Miwsic ar y Maes: 5-8 June, Caernarfon

Visit the Maes (Castle Square) in Caernarfon between 5-8 June and enjoy a number of musical performances, from male voice choirs to Welsh rock and pop. This is a real family event, with funfair rides, street performers, face painting, Punch and Judy, and a bouncy castle among the many activities happening during this mini-carnival. On 5th June there will also be local produce stalls, so make sure you're there to sample a true taste of Snowdonia!

4. Bangor Carnival: 9 June, Bangor

This year's carnival in Bangor starts with a parade at 11am at Sackville Road, which will go all along the High Street, finishing at Beach Road where there's a funfair, climbing wall, hog roast, beer tents, donkey rides, a bucking bronco, a miniature train, a balloon race, and stalls selling local crafts. This is a free event, and a great day out for all the family, so do pop along and enjoy the party atmosphere!

5. Criccieth Festival: 13-24 June, Criccieth

The Criccieth Festival is a great way to explore the Arts in Snowdonia, through a variety of poetry recitals, classical music, jazz and contemporary music concerts, walks, book launches and exhibitions. There's even a garden trail, with the opportunity to see some of the best-kept gardens in Criccieth.

6. Cipio'r Castell: 1 July, Caernarfon

Cipio'r Castell launches on 1st July with a spectacular musical procession to start a month of artistic celebrations at Caernarfon Castle. Hundreds of local children will congregate on the Maes before a giant key opens the castle to the sound of a massed fanfare from the ramparts. Rap, orchestral and choral music, live theatre and art installations are on the menu that day, followed by a month of art installations throughout the castle.

7. North Wales Bluegrass Festival: 5-8 July, Conwy

The North Wales Bluegrass Festival at Conwy is a four-day extravaganza of bluegrass music and Appalachian dance teams, bringing a taste of America to Snowdonia. This year's line-up includes Highly Strung, Biggin Hillbillies, Conwy Mountain Band and many more. Tickets for the entire weekend, including camping, start from as little as £65 for adults and £32 for children.

8. Wakestock: 6-8 July, Abersoch

Wakestock has for years been the biggest event in Abersoch's calendar. This festival combines music and wakeboarding, and attracts thousands of visitors and much media attention. This year's line-up includes Ed Sheeran, Calvin Harris, Dizzee Rascal, Rizzle Kicks and a number of BBC Radio 1 DJs including Huw Stephens.

9. Glass Butter Beach: 17-18 August, Llanbedrog

Glass Butter Beach combines great music with wakeboarding, surfing, skateboarding and BMX biking. "2012 is all about the beach," proclaims the festival's website - so slap on some sunblock and head for Llanbedrog this August! Performing at Glass Butter Beach this year are Chicane, Grandmaster Flash, the Kickbacks and Charlotte O'Connor, with more acts still to be announced.

10. Festival Number 6: 14-16 September, Portmeirion Village

Festival Number 6 is potentially the most unusual festival taking place in Snowdonia this summer - in terms of the venue, at least! Spiritualized, New Order and Primal Scream are the headliners at this 3-day festival which kicks off at Portmeirion Village on 14 September. There will also be all sorts of arts and culture events, including comedy and film screenings.

Steven Jones is Senior Tourism Services Officer at Cyngor Gwynedd Council, a Welsh local authority whose Visit Snowdonia website is the official tourism website for the Snowdonia region. Visit Snowdonia provides visitors with helpful information about the region, including Snowdonia activities and Snowdonia attractions.
