Timeless kitchens stand the test of time

Home Improvement
While putting a personal stamp on kitchens is a great way to add splashes of colour and unusual designs, it is also important to think about when the time comes to move, or if your tastes ever change.

Bright splashbacks and kitchen units can at first look the part, but your current preferences might not remain the same a few years down the line. If you don't think you will have the finances to revamp the room at a later date, or if you like to decorate with a future sale in mind, it is worth keeping the kitchen simple and timeless.

As tempting as it is to go all out with the decor, keeping in mind the fact you might want to sell your home will help rein in some of your wackiest ideas! This will certainly pay off, especially if it prevents you from ever having to completely transform the kitchen to accommodate your changing tastes, or those of potential buyers. Indeed, going for a timeless look means future owners can envisage how big the space is and if it meets their requirements, rather than being distracted by bright colours and quirky features.

A great place to start is the worktops and units. This is where pull-out storage is important, as even the simplest of kitchens can look messy and cramped when there is a lot of clutter lining the surfaces. This will not only get in the way of entertaining your family and friends, cooking and cleaning, but could potentially put off future buyers if they come away with the idea the room is smaller than it is. Pull-out spice racks and shelves on the back of cupboard doors will keep everything tidy and prevent a kitchen from looking worn.

The next thing to consider is the material you want your units and worktops to be. Wood is a fantastic option as it never dates, especially if you choose a black or pale worktop. Painted units look timeless in both traditional and urban kitchens. It is a wise idea to keep the paint scheme as neutral as possible, despite the fact a variety of hues are available. This will help both you and any future occupiers enjoy a blank canvas when purchasing contrasting accessories, such as bright kettles and toasters. Stainless steel handles will also be a better investment than wooden knobs, as this material stands the test of time and looks more modern.

Indeed, stainless steel is a material that will unlikely become out of date any time soon, so you might want to purchase a hob, extractor fan, oven and splashback made from it. A large number of fridge freezers are also made from the material, helping to integrate the look. Perhaps try to avoid decking out your entire kitchen in stainless steel though, as it can sometimes make the room seem cold and characterless, rather than inviting and warming. Potential buyers may also find it difficult to picture how it will look with their own decor ideas.

The ability of lights to lift a room should also not be underestimated. Rather than choosing strip kitchen lighting, LED spotlights are more attractive, provide a better glow and open up a room, no matter the decor. Installing LEDs underneath the kitchen units can also make the room appear brighter and help provide you with more light when cooking and reading recipe books.

For everything you need to create timeless kitchens, look no further than Fitmykitchen. From pull-out storage and appliances to kitchen lighting and splashbacks, we have all the points covered for a sleek and fuss-free room.
