This year the Olympics will be coming to London. In July and August 2012 Greenwich Park, the National Maritime Museum, Old Royal Navy College and Circus Field will host the equestrian events. The Paralympic Dressage will be held in September. Greenwich Park was chosen for its close proximity to the Olympic Village. All the structures will be temporary and will be removed at the end of the games avoiding the need to build a new permanent arena. The park will only be closed for a short period of time to avoid disruption to the visiting public. The equestrian disciplines which will be held are: dressage, eventing, and showjumping. In each discipline both individual and team medals are awarded. In the mainstream equestrian events men and women compete against each other on equal terms. All sole equestrian events take place over four days. The dressage competition will involve 50 competitors across team and individual events. The event will test the ability of the horse and rider to display athleticism and elegance. Competitors will take part in a team and individual event which run simultaneously a riders score in a test can be counted in both events. The team event includes the grand prix and grand prix special rounds, the individual event includes an extra round the grand prix freestyle. The eventing consists of Dressage, Show Jumping and Cross-Country. The Cross-Country section takes place over one day. In eventing 75 competitors will compete in total across team and individual events. The combination of the three elements tests every element of horsemanship: the dressage shows the harmony between horse and rider, cross country requires speed, strength and confidence whereas the showjumping shows precision, control and agility. The showjumping competition will also involve 75 riders total across the team and individual. There are five rounds in the Show Jumping competition. Two rounds are used to determine the placing in the Team event, with all five rounds playing a part in the Individual event. A jump of will take place if two or more competitors are in joint place for medals after the fifth round. The modern pentathlon also has an equestrian element of showjumping, which is held alongside pistol shooting, fencing, swimming and cross country running. 26 competitors will compete in the modern pentathlon; men compete on the first day and women on the second day. The Paralympic dressage will take place over five days; competitors will complete in two dressage tests the first being a championship test made up of set movements. The second is a freestyle test which competitors will choreograph themselves and choose their own movements and music.
