The pros and cons of the 3 main types of splashback

Home Improvement
If you are looking for splashbacks to fit behind kitchen sinks and hobs, there are plenty of materials for you to choose from. Tiles, stainless steel and glass tend to be the three most popular, with each type having pros and cons.

When it comes to designing kitchens, an increasing amount of time and effort is placed into selecting the perfect splashback. It all depends on your lifestyle, budget and the decor of your room.

Here is a guide to the three main splashback materials which should help you form a decision as to which is best for you.

Traditional tiles

Tiles are the most traditional type of material for splashbacks and look great in farmhouse-style kitchens and cottages. They also tend to be the most affordable, which is great if you want to upgrade your kitchen on a budget. Don't make the mistake of thinking your choice of tile splashbacks will be limited. From small mosaic sheets of tile with pieces of glitter to large slabs with flamboyant designs on, you will easily find a splashback to perfectly complement your kitchen.

Black grout can be used for tiles in dark colours, which is great if you cook a lot of pasta sauces, chillies and curries and want to minimise the appearance of splatters and stains. Of course, you will still need to keep tile splashbacks clean, which is perhaps the biggest downside to choosing this material. As grout is required, there is a risk of mould forming if you do not keep on top of maintenance, especially behind the sink. If you need to use white grout, you will likely find yourself cleaning the tiles every time you cook.

Contemporary stainless steel

If having a fuss-free kitchen is a priority for you, you should consider stainless steel splashbacks. They look modern, and if you have kitchen appliances made out of the material, a stainless steel splashback will ensure your decor seamlessly flows from one area to the next. This type of fitting looks great with matching hobs, ovens and extractor fans and is fairly affordable to purchase.

Most restaurants and hotels opt for stainless steel splashbacks. The main reasons for this are that the material does not rust, corrode and is very hygienic. However, fingerprints and watermarks can often show up on stainless steel, so every now and again you will have to put some effort in and polish the splashback with glass cleaner. Should you decide to protect a large area of your kitchen with stainless steel, you might find this cleaning routine inconvenient.

Eye-catching glass

If you love your kitchen to have a display of colour, glass splashbacks will be perfect for you. Whatever shade the room is painted, you will find glass to match. You might even decide to buy bright kitchen appliances to complement this feature. Glass looks modern, which is great if this is the design you want to achieve.

Glass is also very easy to clean and does not attract mould. All you need to do is wipe it with a damp cloth, meaning you don't have to waste time scrubbing it. However, the downside to this convenience and the fact glass looks so eye-catching is the price. It can be more expensive than stainless steel and tile - so covering large areas of your kitchen can soon add up. Some glass splashbacks cannot be cut to fit around features such as plug sockets, either.

To add the finishing touches to kitchens, splashbacks are perfect to complement the decor. Fitmykitchen has a range of splashbacks in different materials for behind kitchen sinks and hobs.

Whether you want a bright glass one to match kitchen appliances, or would prefer a sturdy stainless steel splashback, we can help you buy the right product for your needs.
