Unmissable Cairns sights and experiences

Travel & Tourism
If you're planning a getaway to Australia and want to take in some spectacular nature and rich culture, browse the internet for cheap flights to Cairns. The Queensland city is close to the Great Barrier Reef and rainforests, and is also renowned for its indigenous heritage.

Think of Australia and sandy beaches will often spring to mind; while Cairns has its fair share of coastal bays, the settlement also has much more to offer. Undoubtedly the city's natural environment is its main draw, and when you visit you'll certainly want to see the Great Barrier Reef. Head here and you can venture out to sea in a glass-bottomed vessel, or explore beneath the waves with some snorkelling or scuba diving equipment. The reef is the world's largest and home to more than 6,600 types of plant and animal life. Some 400 species are coral, while 1,500 are different types of fish.

In addition to the reef, Cairns boasts the scenic Barron Gorge National Park, tropical Atherton Tablelands and the Daintree rainforests. A real must is a ride on the Skyrail Cableway, which will take you through the national park, stopping at stations along the way so you can tread the boardwalks and read the informative signs. For an extra-memorable trip, take the Skyrail to Kurunda village and travel back on a railway ride through the breathtaking landscape and past all manner of important historical locations.

If you've booked a flight to Australia, your holiday wouldn't be complete without hitting the beach, and you'll have plenty to choose from in Cairns. If it's seclusion you're after, journey to Kewarra Beach to enjoy a quiet picnic, while families will be in their element at Trinity Beach or Yorkey's Knob. Another great sandy spot is Holloways Beach, especially if you want to get active. Here, you can try your hand at canoeing or sailing, while anglers can cast a line.

Families of culture vultures will find plenty to keep them amused on holidays to Cairn, which boasts a wealth of art galleries and museums. You can head to the Original Dreamtime Gallery, Cairns Regional Gallery or the Ancient Earth Indigenous Art Gallery during your stay, as well as call in at the centre established to showcase the photographic landscapes of Australian Peter Lik. Take a walk round the city and you'll discover local art in the most unexpected of places, such as adorning abandoned war-time diesel tanks on Collins Avenue.

If you're especially fond of all things artistic, be sure to plan your getaway to coincide with the Cairns Indigenous Art Fair, which takes place in August. Held at the waterfront of the Cairns Cruise Liner Terminal, the event sees hundreds of artists' works on display, with talks given by some of the painters, sculptors and photographers. Dancing and musical performances take place alongside the main event, and little ones are kept busy with a range of organised activities.

Museums are also plentiful in Cairns, and you can learn more about the area's history and environment by calling in at a couple of these. Head to the Shipwreck Museum, which houses exhibitions relating to the Great Barrier Reef and early explorations of the natural wonder. Alternatively, call in at the Cairns Museum - the largest such centre in the area. Housed in the School of Arts building, the museum showcases artefacts that pertain to Aboriginal culture as well as local history.

Another place worth visiting is the Tjapukai Aboriginal Cultural Park, where you can get involved in interactive activities and watch theatrical performances, all of which aim to increase awareness of the People of the Rainforest - tribes who historically lived in the local rainforests.

There's nowhere better to absorb some rich Cairns culture firsthand than at the city's many markets. Visit the Esplanade markets by the lagoon on a Saturday to shop for locally-made pottery, leather goods and jewellery; you can also enjoy a relaxing massage at some of the stalls here. When the sun has set, make your way to the night markets, where you can take a look at handmade arts and crafts, as well as sample some traditional Australian cuisine. For a night out during your stay in the city, head to Shields Street, which is full of bars, clubs and pubs that attract locals and tourists alike.

Absorb culture while sticking to a budget in Cairns. At Netflights, we have a wide range of flights, including cheap flights to Cairns. For affordable travel to great destinations, make us your one and only port of call.
