Why Did Your Professional Website Design Fail?

Website Design
Owning a website that appears on top of the SERPs and generates higher traffic and sales leads is a dream of every businessman who is venturing into online marketing. However, very few of them actually manage to convert this dream into reality. While some of them resort to the traditional marketing methods, others try to find out what went wrong.

To help such people who want to fix things up and enjoy good returns on their website design investment, we have discussed some primary causes of failure –

It focuses more on what you wanted from the site, and not what your prospects would want

There is no doubt that a website that effectively communicates your message across can become your ladder to success. But in the hurry of climbing that ladder, some of us ending up fulfilling our personal objectives through the website, instead of focusing on what the users would want. When you feel the website design that you have worked on is exactly what YOU wanted, then there is every possibility that your target audience may not engage with the site and feel interested in getting in touch with you. A successful website design is one that is customer-centric and focuses entirely on superior user experience.

On your site, customers often ask themselves “How do I get out of here?’

The Home page of your site may have enticed the users, leaving a positive first impression. However, once they navigate through the site, they are left with the feeling of being lost. This is a perfect recipe of a failed website design. If you spent most of your web design money on decorating the site instead of making it easy-to-use and -navigate, your website is bound to be shunned by the users.

Oops…you forgot integrating SEO

There are millions of websites on the Internet that are competing with you. Then why would Google do you a favour by giving you a higher ranking over the others? The answer is simple- effective search engine optimisation. If you forgot to make your website search engine-friendly, all your web design efforts would go in vain because no one will be able to find it on the SERPs. It is very important to blend your web design with effective on-page and off-page search engine optimisation strategies if you want to promote your business on the World Wide Web.

You followed the fix-it-and-forget-it principle

You might have successfully launched your website and might have enjoyed a consistent stream of serious business seekers and customers, but that was 10 years ago! Right now, you just have an obsolete design and an outdated content which has led to a downfall of your once ‘top-5 SEO’ ranking. It is imperative to revitalise your website design and the content in order to keep pace with the changing times and demands of the users. If you forget to update your site with the latest information, your target audience will also forget you. So, never feel that a successful website design will continue to generate customers and profits for your business even 20 years down the line. You have to work hard on redesigning it in every two years or so.

You thought everything that shines is pretty

You implemented Flash, bright colours, fancy background images, huge fonts and everything that can startle anybody – and you thought this was the best way to capture the attention of the users?! Unfortunately, a combination of these elements is again a great way to throw all your money away on superficial things. Balance is the key to an aesthetically pleasing website design. If you want to use Flash, you need to minimise the use of other images, animation, bigger fonts, and other fancy elements. Similarly if you wish to use bright colours in the background, you have to ensure that it goes with the theme and brand image of your business, and that it is contrasted with plane fonts and less flashy images.

You have too many ideas but not a focused approach

It is good to have a deep understanding and insight of the industry you operate in, but you don’t have to show it off in a single website. When working on your web design, you should avoid stuffing with every minute and irrelevant detail about your business and the industry. You should always stick to the basics, and reveal only what will be interesting for the users, enticing them to get in touch with you and get more business for you. Keep the content concise and to-the-point, so that users can scan through it and take a decision soon.

While your website took time to load, the site visitor dozed off!

Your website had so many things to offer to the customers, but unfortunately the site visitor didn’t have that much time to wait for your site to load. You can lose a lot of business this way because users are often looking for quick information, and if your site fails to provide that within few minutes, the user would not waste any more time waiting for your site to load. Always ensure that the images you use are compressed and all other heavy elements are removed from the site so that it can load within a few seconds. Moreover, the performance and loading of the site may differ from one browser to another. You have to implement a cross-browser test to check that as well.
