Copper is a reddish orange element having atomic number 29. It is a very ductile metal and possesses excellent electrical conductivity. Although copper is used in many industries for various purposes, but its use in the electrical industry for making electrical wires is the most popular one. Given below are some commonly used varieties of copper wire: Nickel Copper Wire: As the name suggests, nickel copper wire is made by a combination of nickel and copper. The chemical properties of the elements from which this wire is made, makes it highly resistant to corrosion, and thus it is widely used in underwater machinery. Silver Plated Copper Wire: This wire is composed of a copper core, which is covered by concentric silver plating. This wire amalgamates the benefits of copper and silver. The silver plated copper wire is mostly used in high frequency applications, as a micro type cable, in military applications, and in aerospace industry as well. Tin Coated Copper Wire: The manufacturing of this wire involves three processes, viz., drawing a wire by making use of Electrolyte (C.C. Rod); annealing; and, tin platting. Tin coated copper wire is mainly used in high voltage industrial equipment. Tinsel Copper Wire: This wire is made by wrapping multiple strands of thin copper foil around a textile core. It is used where maximum mechanical flexibility is required. Its use can be often seen in telephone cords, loudspeakers, and tweeters. Braided Copper Wire: Braided copper wire is made by braiding several wires. It is commonly used as a flexible connector for electrical appliances like storage batteries, irons, and electric stoves.
