How to turn your kitchen into a recycling haven

Travel & Tourism
Despite their best efforts, not everyone manages to stick to a regular recycling routine. One of the biggest complaints is the hassle of taking different items outside several times a day. However, a waste recycling bin can make this a thing of the past.

Tins, glass jars, plastics and paper can soon start to build up on work surfaces, taking up valuable food preparation space and making a room look cluttered. One way to solve this is having a recycling bin split into separate compartments for various materials. This can go next to a freestanding kitchen bin or, if you're short on space or find it more hygienic, inside a cupboard or drawer.

All you need to do is quickly pull the drawer out and drop the items into the right partition. If you already have your kitchen bin in a cupboard, this should come naturally and result in recycling being hassle-free. It also means that whatever the size of the room, you can play a part in helping to protect the environment.

This will mean no more trips to the outside bin in the rain, dropping armfuls of tins and newspaper along the way, as you struggle to keep your kitchen clean and tidy. Of course, you still need to put the recyclables into the right container provided by your local council, but you can do it all in one go, rather than several times a day. One of the main barriers to frequent recycling is that many people see it as a chore and more trouble than it is worth. By conveniently having a waste recycling bin under the sink or in a drawer, going green could come naturally.

Families can quickly accumulate rubbish and sometimes a fortnightly bin collection is not enough, resulting in trips to the local tip. By reducing the amount of waste you place in the usual wheelie bin through recycling, you may find it fills up much more slowly, saving time and effort. This is especially useful for families that are not entitled to a second bin or more frequent collections.

Before placing items into a recycling bin, materials need to be rinsed. However, to keep the container as clean and fragrant as possible just in case of spills, stock up on homeware such as bin bags and liners. Just remember not to throw them in with your bottles or tins or the refuse collectors might not empty your bin!

It is a good idea to ask your local council to provide you with a collection schedule which you can put on your fridge or kitchen notice board. That way, you know exactly which weeks are for recycling and which sees normal domestic rubbish picked up. You won't want your recycling efforts to be wasted if you miss a week and end up with an overflowing bin.

Finally, kitchen appliances can be of assistance with a recycling routine. The best way to dispose of leftover food is in a composter, but this isn't always possible for households. Instead, waste disposal units that fit into your sink can quickly get rid of produce such as potato peel, meaning you don't need to fill your bin with food. It can also prevent bad smells from forming, which can be an issue during the warmer months, especially in small kitchens.

For an effective recycling routine, you'll find everything you need at fitmykitchen. From a waste recycling bin to homeware such as bin bags, we stock all the essentials to make your life that little bit easier.

We also have waste disposal units in our kitchen appliances department, so you can easily get rid of leftover food without it taking up bin space and resulting in unwanted smells.
