"Why should I send a thank you card?" Um...ok. I'll answer this. But first, why not get it out of the way, the occasions on which we don't need to send a thank you card: 1. When you receive unsolicited "gifts" in the mail from unknown charities, that are attempting to guilt you into sending them money: "Please enjoy these address labels, nickels, note pads, you-name-it for no cost or obligation. If you would like to compensate us for the cost of sending them to you..." Who are they kidding? One of these organizations sent me a "free" DVD in the mail over a year ago, which I was to "keep with no obligation." I never sent a donation since they sent the DVD. Ever since then, I get a letter from them every few months, asking me to send money or return the DVD! Ironically, I donated the disk to charity! 2. When you are given "obligation gifts" from your in-laws (whom you know despise you and are meaning to insult you) or other people you don't care for. If you don't have a relationship with these people, and the only time you hear from them is when you receive a pair of snowman earrings from the dime store -- which still has the price tag on it, with two or three price markdowns, and you don't even have pierced ears or celebrate Christmas -- a few days before New Year's, I think it's safe to say you don't owe them a thank you card. On the other hand, if you think sending them an earnest thank you card might make them uncomfortable and that's your goal, knock yourself out. 3. When you've just gotten a manicure, only a half-decent one, and while you're hovering over the signature line on the credit card receipt, the manicurist (in hopes of scoring a bigger tip) waves a finger in the air and declares: "I want you to know that I gave up going to lunch on time, to work on your nails." Not only does she not get a thank you note, but bye-bye goes the tip. So...there you have it. You're not always required to write or send thank you cards. There are many occasions, however, that call for prompt thank you notes. Some of those are: 1. When people you care about give you gifts. 2. When a customer or client refers a new customer or client to your business. 3. When you are provided exceptionally good service, that goes beyond your expectations. 4. When you're basking in good fortune and remember those who have helped you to get where you are. 5. When you're down in the dumps, and someone's kind words lift you up and get you rolling again. 6. When your bank account gets overdrawn, and your friendly banker alerts you to this before you get hit with an overdraft charge. 7. When it hits you out of the blue, that your parent(s) did a darned fine job despite you being a pain sometimes. 8. When you inadvertently hurt someone, and they selflessly forgive you. 9. When the book you're reading is improving your life, and you want the author to know. 10. When the crew you hired to simply paint your house also cleans out and fixes your gutters, consults with you for hours to get just the "right" color, and spends just as long cleaning up after themselves as they did beautifying your house.
