With municipal polls less than a month away, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has demanded that all councillors return the laptops given to them, or pay for them. The civic body issued a circular on Thursday saying that the laptops, along with all accessories, should be returned to the Municipal Secretary before April 22. The MCD had introduced a scheme in 2006, wherein all councillors and nominated members were provided laptops to carry out official work. The 272 councillors were given new Battery Evo N610C laptops, after the civic elections in 2007. But with their tenure nearing an end, the civic body has fixed a deadline to return the laptops. “The laptop along with all the accessories will remain the property of the MCD. So as the session of the present corporation is going to end very soon, all members of the corporation — both councillors and nominated members — will have to surrender the laptops before April 22, 2012,” said Municipal Secretary Kiran Dabral. However, if a councillor wishes to retain it, he will have to pay a LENOVO IdeaPad S10 battery sum of Rs 4,700. In case a nominated member wants to retain the laptop, he/she will have to pay Rs 27,540. “Considering that the nominated members were assigned laptops only last year, they will have to pay a higher amount than the councillors,” said a senior civic official. The HP F4809A battery payments have to be made either in cash or a demand draft, he said. The circular also states that councillors and nominated members are responsible for the safety of the laptops. In case they misplace the laptops, the cost of the gadget will be recovered from them. A similar reminder was issued before the last civic elections in 2007. But six councillors continued to keep the laptops without paying the required amount.
