Towns to visit on a holiday in Wales There are many locations you could choose to visit on a trip to Wales, making it one of the best places to enjoy a family holiday in the UK. For our pick of the best towns to head to, read our guide on where to go. If you're looking for a holiday where you can enjoy the beautiful scenery Wales has to offer, but don't want to spend your time in some of the country's bigger tourist areas, you could make one or two of its smaller towns your base. Porthmadog Porthmadog is located on the coastline in north-west Wales and, lying on the edge of Snowdonia, this town allows visitors to see both the country's rugged shoreline and its breathtaking mountainous landscape. As well as the beautiful natural setting, this town is great to visit if you want to see historical sites. Take a trip to Grisiau Mawr (Big Steps), with the Grade II listed staircase situated above the historic dock, one of the main landmarks in the town. Porthmadog is also known for its three narrow-gauge railway stations, which will allow visitors to explore other regions of Wales, including the Welsh Highlands, Caernarfon and Ffestiniog. In addition, you could visit the Maritime Museum to find out more about the history of its busy harbour and its importance in the slate trade. Portmeirion Not far from Porthmadog is the splendid town of Portmeirion, also on the coastline. You won't forget a trip here in a hurry, as the area is situated on a steep hillside that overlooks the sea below. Its charming character and unique architecture also makes this place memorable. Indeed, the picturesque setting of the town enables visitors to experience a side of Wales they won't have encountered before. Sir Clough Williams-Ellis built the area in the style of an Italian town in the 1900s, so don't be surprised if you think there is a distinctive Mediterranean feel to the locality. You'll discover brightly-coloured buildings, streets of cafes and independent shops, and antiquated structures in the town centre, giving Portmeirion a charm that attracts more than 250,000 people every year. This is also likely to be the result of its portrayal in a number of television shows over the years, such as the series The Prisoner. Haverfordwest Another popular destination in Wales is Haverfordwest. This is located in Pembrokeshire, south Wales, and its larger size means there's plenty to do to keep everyone amused on UK short breaks - including little ones. Spend your days on the beach or playing with buckets and spades with the kids. For those looking for daytrips to do while in the area, head to Picton Castle, a short distance outside the town. Here, you can walk around the medieval building or in its landscaped gardens. To use up some of your children's excess energy, head to Llys y Fran Reservoir & Country Park. There are up to 350 acres for you to enjoy here and you could go cycling around the countryside, put on your walking boots and go for a long hike or try your hand at fishing. Fishguard Also in Pembrokeshire is the town of Fishguard. This location is great for families looking for activities weekends, as there are plenty of things to do here to keep children busy all day long. You could take part in water sports, such as kayaking, or you could head out on to the cliff top and try to spot a few basking sharks and dolphins in the bay below. Kids might also like to search for smaller sea creatures in rock pools. After the little ones have had fun having a splash in the sea and looking for crabs, head to the Gwaun Valley Brewery, just a short drive away from the town, where you can sample the local tipple. Abergavenny For a bigger town, visit Abergavenny. Here, you'll find all the amenities you could need to make your holiday run smoothly. As well as facilities that will keep kids amused, the town is surrounded by beautiful countryside, so make the most of this. You could take your children on a long, relaxing walk by the River Usk, before indulging them - and yourself - with tea and cakes in one of the many cafes in the town.
