If you are suffering from Diabetes, you may believe that you have received a life sentence. This does not have to be the case. Often, with the right diet, you can reverse your condition and beat it completely. This is true for Type II Diabetes. Type I Diabetes may also be regulated with the right diet. If you are able to properly regulate your diet, you may find that a need for medication no longer exists and that you may be able to prevent complications for an extended period of time. With a Diabetic diet, you are still able to eat carbohydrates. It’s the kind of carbs which makes the difference. Doctors used to recommend that you eliminate carbohydrates from the diet completely if you were diagnosed with this condition. Now, research has shown that a Diabetic diet should have carbohydrates because they provide a large proportion of the energy the body uses. If you suddenly eliminate carbohydrates and replace them with proteins and fats, complications can arise as kidney abnormalities are often seen with Diabetes. Eating carbohydrates requires that you watch how many carbohydrates you eat and what type they are. Use this ratio: 50% carbohydrates, 20% proteins, less than 30% fats. There are three different types of carbohydrates that you need to develop your Diabetic diet: Starches, Sugars and Fiber. Starches include whole grains, beans, peas and potatoes. Sugars are those which are naturally found in foods such as fruits and milks. These sugars may also be found in food additives. The third type of carbohydrates is fiber. This is the roughage found in vegetables and fruits. To properly balance your diet, you should eat approximately 13 grams of carbohydrates for every 100 calories you consume. This is a general rule of thumb and your doctor will make adjustments as needed. Each serving should also contain two to five grams of fiber. For Type I Diabetics, the amount of sugar you take in must be closely monitored so insulin doses may be adjusted. You must monitor both natural and added sugars to know how much insulin to take. Type II Diabetics have a little more wiggle room in their diet. Sugar is natural but you have to read labels. The type of sugar, the form it comes in is very important. Go with whole fruit not fruit juice and regular sugar not high fructose corn syrup. HFCS goes straight to the liver and can shut down insulin production. Search out a good Diabetic diet (or hire a nutritionist) and with the proper diet, you can better manage your disease and avoid complications. Diabetic diet
