What use can electronic medical and health records offer to improve healthcare services? EMR or Electronic Medical Record, and EHR, or Electronic Health Record, are systems developed for use in medical practices. It was first developed as a way to easily and conveniently storage, retrieves, and modifies medical records. However, there are also other important benefits that the use of EMR and EHR systems had added that made it an integral part in medical practices. Here are some of those: Avoiding Most Medical Errors One main advantage that made EMR and EHR important is because of the fact that it had replaced the use of paper-based medical records, which are usually the cause of many medical errors. According to many experts, handwritten paper medical records can be associated with poor legibility, which can contribute to medical errors. Pre-printed forms, the standardization of abbreviations, and standards for penmanship were encouraged to improve reliability of paper medical records. Electronic records help with the standardization of forms, terminology and abbreviations, and data input. Digitization of forms facilitates the collection of data for epidemiology and clinical studies. Easier Access to Medical Records Another important factor that made EMR and ehr software important for healthcare services is that it had significantly improved medical practices by allowing healthcare workers and professionals easy and convenient access to medical records which can be used to assist them in diagnosing a disease. This made it faster for healthcare workers to assess a disease, which can be critical for certain diseases, such as psychiatry emr. This made EMR and EHR systems an important part in medical practices for many healthcare institutions. Faster Transfer of Medical Records In addition to those benefits, another important benefit that made electronic medical records important is because it allows for faster transfer of medical records from one healthcare institution to another, such as transferring a patient’s medical or health record from one hospital to the other. Unlike the old process in which a courier service is hired to deliver a health or medical record to another hospital or other healthcare institution, the use of EMR or HER system made this process a lot easier, faster, and more convenient. Cost-Cutting Another important aspect of using EMR and EHR systems is that it had significantly reduced the cost used for storing paper-based medical records. Because medical records are stored for 7 years, larger healthcare institutions would usually have to add additional storage facilities or rent storage spaces to store all these medical records. Electronic medical records, on the other hand, allows larger healthcare institutions to store all their medical records in a little space within their premises for longer than 7 years without having to worry about adding additional storage facilities.
