What are the advantages of using EMR and EHR Systems to the improvement of medical practices? EMR (Electronic Medical Records) and EHR (Electronic Health Records) are systems developed for use in healthcare institutions which aims to improve medical practices by giving them easier and convenient access to medical records. Difference between EMR and EHR Although these terms can be used interchangeably, there are several differences between and EMR system from EHR software. The EMR can, for example, be defined as the patient record created in hospitals and ambulatory environments, and which can serve as a data source for the EHR. It is important, according to many experts, to note that an EHR is generated and maintained within an institution, such as a hospital, integrated delivery network, clinic, or physician office, to give patients, physicians and other health care providers, employers, and payers or insurers access to a patient's medical records across facilities. Advantages of using EMR/EHR Systems Other than just for easier storage, retrieval, and modification of medical records, there are also other advantages of using EMR/EHR systems to improve medical practices. One of those is that it had completely eliminated medical errors commonly associated with paper-based medical records. Avoiding Medical Errors Handwritten paper medical records can be associated with poor legibility, which can contribute to medical errors. Pre-printed forms, the standardization of abbreviations, and standards for penmanship were encouraged to improve reliability of paper medical records. electronic medical records help with the standardization of forms, terminology and abbreviations, and data input. Digitization of forms facilitates the collection of data for epidemiology and clinical studies. Easier Access to Medical Errors One of the main benefits that made EMR/EHR systems integral to the improvement of medical practices is that it gave healthcare workers and professionals easier access to medical records, giving them the advantage of easily diagnosing by accessing existing medical records. In addition to its easier access to medical records, another important benefit of using EMR/EHR systems is that it made it easier for healthcare institutions to transfer medical records from one institution, to the other. This makes it faster for healthcare institutions to medical record transferring which usually take a lot of time through courier services. Cost-Cutting Another important factor of using EMR/EHR systems is that it had significantly decreased the cost for storage facilities by larger healthcare institutions, particularly because medical records are normally kept for 7 years. pain management emr allows healthcare institutions to store all their medical records within a digital storage space, such as a hard disk drive, which can also be easily stored within the institution’s premises.
