All You Need To Know About Wagyu

Wagyu, if taken in the literal sense of the word, translates to "cow" in Japanese. The word encompasses a whole range of breeds of beef, including Kumamoto Reds, Shimane, Okayama and Tottori, among others. Wagyu is generally regarded as gourmet beef and it has made a big impact on the gourmet food market as being among the most sought after types of beef.

Wagyu beef is very different from other ordinary cuts of beef in its texture, taste, fat content and other aspects. It is highly regarded in the meat market because of its marbled appearance and texture. The meat, when cooked well, should be tender and juicy because it has strips of fat that incorporate into the meat when cooking, which gives Wagyu its rich and unique flavor.

This kind of meat not only tastes better, but is also healthier to consume and is great for those that like to eat meat but are conscious of their health at the same time. It contains higher amounts of Omega 3 and 6, which are all great for the body. The meat comes with different labels that help to determine the quality of the meat. The label ranges from 1-12, with anything above 9 (diamond) being the highest quality. 7-9 is referred to as gold, 6-7 known as black, 3-6 being referred to as platinum and 0-3 being red.

Wagyu beef is typical to Japan and is thus a big part of the culinary experience in that country. Although the consumption of meat has not been a big part of Japanese cuisine, mainly because the predominant Buddhist religion forbade it, trends have changed dramatically in recent times, and Wagyu is widely sought after. The cows were traditionally farm animals and were not eaten for the most part, as they were seen mainly for their role in farm work rather than a source of food.

The way that the Wagyu are bred is what gives the beef its unique and rich flavor. The cows are not given much room to move around and the end result is that the muscles on the animal tend to cramp. When this happens, fat accumulates in the meat, creating the rich flavor of the resulting beef. The cow's rear is also massaged and this is widely believed to add on to the flavor of the meat when the animal is eventually slaughtered.

Most of the Wagyu on the meat market today actually comes from Japan and the exportation of this sought after food item is increasing as more and more people develop the taste for gourmet foods. Wagyu steaks are considered the best steak online by many people.
