What is the importance of EMR/EHR (Electronic Medical Records/Electronic Health Records) systems in medical practices? EMR and EHR systems are technologies developed solely for the use of healthcare institutions, such as hospitals, which aims to improve storage, retrieval, and modification of medical records. However, other than just for the facilitation of medical records, there are also other important benefits in which EMR, EHR software and pain management emr is known for which made these systems an integral part of medical practices. Here are some of those benefits: Avoiding Medical Errors One important benefit of using electronic medical records is that it had completely eliminated the kinds of medical errors commonly associated with the use of paper-based medical records. Handwritten paper medical records can be associated with poor legibility, which can contribute to medical errors. Pre-printed forms, the standardization of abbreviations, and standards for penmanship were encouraged to improve reliability of paper medical records. Electronic records help with the standardization of forms, terminology and abbreviations, and data input. Digitization of forms facilitates the collection of data for epidemiology and clinical studies. Improved Medical Efficacy Another important factor of using EMR/EHR systems is with its improved medical efficacy due to its decision support systems. With its faster access to medical records, healthcare workers and professionals can easily make faster decisions which can prove critical to a patient’s ailment. One study estimates electronic medical records improve overall efficiency by 6% per year, and the monthly cost of an EMR may (depending on the cost of the EMR) be offset by the cost of only a few "unnecessary" tests or admissions. Cost-Cutting Another important benefit that made EMR/EHR systems integral to different healthcare institutions is because these systems had significantly lessen the amount of budget used for storage facilities. It is a standard in the US that medical records must be stored for 7 years. Because of this, larger healthcare institutions have had problems regarding the storage of medical records. With electronic medical records, all records can be easily stored within a digital storage, such as a Hard Disk Drive, which can also be easily stored within an institution’s premises. Smaller healthcare institutions, however, may not benefit from its cost as EMR/EHR systems are very expensive equipment, and that they don’t usually require larger storage facilities to store their medical records.
