The advantages of fitting a breakfast bar in your kitchen

Home Improvement
Anyone who has ever decided to revamp their kitchen will know how difficult it is to make the best use of all the space available. One option that is often overlooked is a breakfast bar, which can be both practical and stylish if done well.

The major advantage of fitting this type of kitchen accessory is that it takes up far less room than a table and can also be tailor-made to ensure it slots into an awkward space that would otherwise be difficult to utilise.

Typically, people choose a breakfast bar if they have a small kitchen and already have a table suitable for meals in the dining room or lounge. It can be attached to your work surfaces as an extension that juts into part of the room you are not using, or as a raised platform above the worktops.

However, as they are quite versatile, they can also be used as an extra table space on an island in a large kitchen, so you don't have to clear away everything you are working on when you wish to take a short break for a snack. They are also a great choice for a galley-style kitchen where there would not be room for a table, as they can be fitted in a relatively narrow space along a wall.

Being much smaller than tables is not the only way in which breakfast bars help to save room. As they are quite high, you will need stools rather than chairs, but they can be stored entirely under the bar itself while they are not being used.

You will discover that bars like this are a practical solution for a busy family. They provide a designated area for people to eat in the morning while they get ready for work and school, and are also a great place for young children to have their evening meals. As they will be in the kitchen, you can keep an eye on the little ones without having to take a break from your other chores.

As well as being practical, a breakfast bar can be a stylish addition to the room. The most common way to fit the product is as an attachment to the existing worktops. Choose to have it in the same material and it will match your design scheme nicely, and be simple to keep clean using ordinary homeware products.

However, there is no reason why you cannot use a little imagination when designing it. For example, you could choose strengthened clear glass for it, or opt for something timeless that is a contrast to the rest of the room, such as black granite. If you have a farmhouse-style kitchen, you may prefer a wooden surface.

Don't forget about the stools, as opting for some that are out of keeping with your design scheme could ruin the look of the room. There is a wide range available, with everything from wooden barstools to sleek leather models, so there should be something that matches your tastes.

If you decide against a breakfast bar, but still need to find ways to save space as you design your new kitchen, make sure you focus on the storage. Installing items like carousels in corner cupboards, pull out kitchen drawers in large units and recycling bins attached to the inside of doors can help to create extra room.
