Going to University abroad is no longer just a fantastic experience for the students concerned, it is fast becoming required professional training and part of the CVs of younger generations. Acquiring knowledge of a language, a culture and a way of thinking that is different from one’s own, whilst studying for a degree, can really provide that extra boost for a career in our competitive and dynamic labour market. The Italian language schools Leonardo da Vinci help foreign students who wish to study for a degree course in Italy by providing special university access courses for the 2008/09 academic year, particularly for those specialising in Medicine and Architecture. The courses comprise Italian language training (of varying duration and tailored to level and ability) as well as a summer course where qualified lecturers provide tutoring for the university admission tests which are now set by almost every faculty. An Italian language school for foreigners with almost three decades of experience is the perfect environment for the task as real problem for non-Italians is competing against local candidates at the admissions tests for courses that have selective admissions. Indeed, for EU students, now on a par with Italians in terms of access to degree courses, entry requirements do not solely focus on knowledge of the subject but rather on knowledge of Italian language and culture, while non-EU students face additional administrative hurdles and also have to pass a special Italian language exam. “We have been very successful in preparing students for university admission,” says Leonardo Moretto, Director of Studies of the Leonardo da Vinci School in Rome, “one of our real success stories was ensuring that eight students from Thailand were admitted to degree courses at the Roma 2 University – Tor Vergata. They prepared for entrance with us on a special course organized in conjunction with their government, and, having arrived in Rome with beginners’ Italian in September, were able to pass all the university’s Italian exams, as well as the entrance test for the degree course in Tourism. They are now living and studying full-time in Rome”.
