Are you experiencing water shortage at home or in the office? No, well this could be set to change following announcements by the Environment Agency that reservoirs are currently empty due to low rainfall and that much of England is officially in a state of drought. A summit was recently held by the Environment Secretary to voice concerns that several parts of England are facing low levels of groundwater. The government alerted that large areas of the UK could soon face or have already encountered drought and are requesting the public to start preserving water. You are probably wondering where you could begin saving water and it is likely that you feel you are not currently wasting water. However we are all guilty of committing water wastage, particularly when we are at home. For instance, although it takes few seconds to brush the teeth, it comes as a surprise that an individual wastes half a litre of water every day whilst keeping the tap running. You also will be stunned to know that an average person in Britain uses 150 litres of water each day. Here are a few simple tips on how you can help preserve water and save England- 1. Take a shower, not a bath. What is the difference? A shower is where you wash yourself standing whereas a bath is relaxing in the tub. You will save gallons in a short span of time as taking a bath consumes twice the amount of water than a shower. 2. Toilet- Nearly one third of water delivered to homes is flushed away. One certainly needs to flush after using the toilet but switching to flush saver bags, can help save gallons of water. Also where possible, try not to throw cigarettes, facial tissues or cotton wool balls in the toilet which then impels you to flush unnecessarily. Every time you flush, nearly 6 litres of water is consumed. 3. Kitchen- The concept of brushing also applies to the dishes. Once again, don't keep the tap on while hand washing the dishes even if it’s your everyday coffee cup. It may take as little as 10 seconds but multiplying those seconds into days results in gallons. Using a dishwasher? Simple, just use it to the maximum capacity; you surely know the reasoning to that. 4. House Clearing- The weekend activities; washing clothes and cleaning the house are few of the tasks that consume a lot of water. Make sure to use water where necessary, otherwise make use of the broom and put clothes for wash only when you think it would completely fill the washing machine. 5. Cars and Gardens- The Environment Secretary is considering reintroducing a hosepipe ban as result of the water shortage. However, there is a way out, we can replace the pipes with spray nozzles that consume less water and use a bucket and sponge to wash our cars. Its a tough but wise decision. Lastly, make sure there is no water dripping from your taps and get all the pipes fixed if you come across any leakage. Warning note- With summer approaching it's predicted to get hotter this year so unless you want your water taps to run dry, start preserving.
