Did you know that both of the most popular soda sparkle brands, Coke and Pepsi, started out as medicines from apothecaries? Both were supposed to be tonic drinks. Coca-Cola was first advertised as a patent medicine to cure many diseases while Pepsi-Cola was promoted as aiding to digestion aside from both being energy boosters. They were later offered at 5 cents a glass in soda fountains. Its early acceptance relied on the belief that carbonated water was a healthful drink and that particular tang that appealed to customers of all ages. The demand increase rate for the cola drinks was such that both companies underwent several corporate shifts and expansion programs before establishing their roles as suppliers of formula syrup concentrate, the main ingredient. Bottling, distribution and warehousing were franchises that marketed the products in specific geographical locations worldwide recognising the concentrate supplier as the mother company. A large chunk of the sugar and sweetener industry owe much of their business to the two giant drink makers especially on account of independent bottlers which have a free hand in adjusting the sweetness of the cola drinks for local taste buds in their official territories. The bottling and glass industry are also beneficiaries of Coke and Pepsi allied business opportunities. A more recent increase in use of PET bottles and aluminium or tin cans by the soft drink producers for new product packaging has opened up business opportunities in the metals and plastics industry. Many have tried but failed to replicate the performance of the two biggest soda pop makers. The syrup concentrate is said to be a carefully guarded trade secret that is known only to a few chemists in the highest echelon of the corporate structure. Other ingredients are ordinary substances that can be bought from local groceries and other similar sources. The process of soft drink manufacture is rather well known. It has encouraged some entrepreneurs to come up with their own versions and some have been successful to enjoy significant sales in their local markets. Many have been bought out though by the two giants through mergers or outright purchase of facilities and rights when they enter the local market. The knowledge of soft drink making has therefore become commonplace. Hobbyists make their own concoctions using flavourings and ingredients that range from fresh fruits to teas and synthetic products readily available from local stores. Methods of carbonation or the process of dissolving carbon dioxide as a final touch to soda sparkle making can be learned from many “how-to” websites. Many of these home-made concoctions have seeped through to the larger food and drink companies and were incorporated into their product lines.
