Breaking News: 'UK Petrol Price Hits Record High', 'Petrol reaches new high of 137.44p', and 'Petrol is set to hit new high today'. On March 2nd 2012, the average price of unleaded petrol reached a whopping £1.37 per litre and this could be set to increase as Sunday saw Chancellor George Osborne decline the plea of Campaigners to scrap the 3p per litre rise in fuel duty. In 2010 it would have cost approximately £56 to fill a 50 litre tank, however today it costs in excess of £68 for the same amount of fuel. Also rumour has it that prices are to rise further with diesel prices predicted to reach 150p a litre by Easter. Living in the city, one can probably choose an alternative by travelling on trains and buses and subsequently cut expenses as well as CO2 emissions. But what about the people who live in the countryside where public transport services are not at their best and driving is the only means of transport? Here is a quite comprehensive list of tips that could help you reduce fuel consumption. 1. The right gear – We all know how to drive but how well do we know how the gearbox works? Shifting in the right gear is where most of the drivers lack experience, with this having a huge impact on the fuel consumption. Driving in a gear lower than required means you are pushing the car by accelerating way over its limit without changing the gear and this results in higher consumption. It is suggested that you change the gear as soon as you feel the car is comfortable with the higher gear but without accelerating harder than necessary. 2. Speed – Ever considered looking at the speedometer which shows you the amount of fuel being consumed. We all love to drive fast but that’s when the most fuel is consumed. Driving at 50mph increases gas mileage whereas speeding over 50mph (90km/h) to 75mph (110km/h) on a highway increases fuel consumption by more than 20%. Have a cruise control installed, then make the most of it as it helps maintain a constant speed and thereby save fuel. 3. Idling – 30 seconds. Waiting for the green signal, picking up your buddy, wife or girlfriend, if it’s going to take more than 30 seconds then it's better to turn off the engine because you are unnecessarily wasting fuel when keeping the engine running. So, the next time you are idling think of the rising fuel prices. 4. Tyres – Probably wondering what connection tyres have with fuel consumption? Air contracts in cooler winter conditions and under-inflated tyres are likely to cause fuel consumption to increase by almost 6%. Therefore, having tyres checked once every month will not only help save fuel but also improve handling. 5. Buying a new car – Rising fuel costs can make you change your decision of buying a new car. Instead why not buy a hybrid car. Toyota, Nissan, Lexus and Honda dealers are now offering a wide range of hybrid cars that can save as much as 38% of fuel in the city and 19% on the highway.
