Electric Razors - Do You Need One?

Family & Parenting
Men have been shaving for centuries, since the time of the cave men. The last U.S. President with a beard was William Howard Taft who left the White House in 1913. While you can still get a shave in an old fashioned barber shop, it's not as easy to head down to see Floyd the Barber or worse, Sweeney Todd.

Some of the earliest shaving devices were clamshells, shark's teeth, and flint knives. Safety razors have been around for less than 200 years. Disposable blades have been around about half that time.

Jacob Schick invented the first motorized shaver and it was available in 1931 for around $25. By the mid-1930s, more than a million motorized shavers had been sold. Schick's wasn't the first patent for an electric razor, but his design made the appliance usable and the idea caught on.

Today electric razors come in two basic types: foil and rotary. In a foil razor, thin, curved metal foil covers a cutting blade. The blade cuts stubble as it pokes through the foil while moving back and forth. A rotary razor general has three or four round heads where cutters spin beneath the heads to cut the hair.

There is a great deal of convenience with electric razors, especially if you travel. You can get away without packing the razors and the shaving cream. Certain models will work in the shower. And no blotchy pieces of toilet tissue where you cut yourself. Plus you generally miss out on such un-pleasantries as skin irritation and razor burn or barber's itch.

On the other hand, it's difficult to get a really close shave with an electric razor. You may find yourself going over the same spot multiple times. That's something to consider if you have sensitive skin. For some men, time between shavings is shorter. Still, millions of men are happy with the shave from their electric razor.

Adjusting to the use of an electric razor can take some time. Plan on at least two weeks for your skin to get used to the new razor. Initially you may see some skin irritation.

When you're looking for an electric razor, you want to search for overall quality and features that best meet your needs. Consider the best models and the features that you are actually going to use.

If you do tend to travel, or like to occasionally shave at the gym or office, you may want to opt for a rechargeable shaver or one that gives you both the option of a plugin or rechargeable battery. For the most part, though, if you're only using it at home, stick with the electric one and you won't be disappointed by a battery that failed to charge. It really does come down to your personal preference and your personal grooming habits.

If you like to shave in the shower, waterproof models are available. But be careful. A "washable" razor is not the shame as a waterproof razor. A washable razor means that you can remove the shaving head and wash it under running water.

You'll find a wide range of prices with electric razors. It may be best to decide how much you're willing to spend and go from there. If you find the must have model, you can deal with your budget later. But more money doesn't necessarily equate to a better product for your needs.

If you're going to be using a razor every morning, how does it fit in your hand? Is it comfortable? Will it do what you need it to do? There are multiple styles and models from which to choose. The ultimate decision is yours. Get the one that best fits your needs and your style.
