The most useful vegetable in the kitchen is the onion, and what’s great is that these are one of the easiest vegetables to grow in the garden. Growing your own vegetables is extremely satisfying but when it comes to growing onions one thing that you need to decide is do you grow your onions from onion sets or seeds. The decision can be a tricky one because both methods have their pros and cons. The experienced gardener will no doubt grow their onions from seeds. For a fast and efficient way to grow onions some will buy sets of small onions and transplant them into the garden in just a few months these grow into large flavoursome onions. Planting Onion sets have small grown onions that can be transplanted to the soil plot during March and April. The onions then swell and grow into large onions that will be ready to harvest in late summer. Onion sets are great if you do not have a greenhouse or if you are limited for space I your greenhouse. To grow your onions from seeds, you will need to sow them in modular trays first around March, and keep them in the greenhouse until the seedlings have rooted well. Around May your seedlings will be ready to transfer into the garden in rows of about 4in intervals, and spaces about 12in apart, ensure to use a compost. Continue to water on a regular basis maintaining the moisture in the soil. Harvesting The onion globes will then continue to grow throughout the summer. Once the leaves start to yellow and begin to die lift the onions out of the ground a little to allow the sun to reach the base. Once the foliage has completely died, dry the onions inside a shed or greenhouse. Cost You can save a great deal of money growing onions from seeds rather than sets. For example; • 1 packet of 250 seeds = £1.50 approximately. If an onion grew from every seed then each onion would cost less than 1p. • 1 pack of 40 onion sets = £4.00 approximately. If an onion grew from every seed then each onion would cost 10p. Whether you decide to grow onions from seeds or sets depends on the amount of effort that you are prepared to put in. growing from sets will save you a great deal of time but will cost you more than you need to pay.
