Food is nutrition. Is a nutrition program the same as a food program? They may be similar in many ways but they also respond to dissimilar challenges or reasons. Nutrition programs are implemented to ensure proper nourishment for people, especially children, in areas where there is rampant malnutrition. A food program is usually about distribution of staple food from an established buffer stock when there are calamities or for other unforeseen requirements. While the latter is also a concern on food requirement, it is not for a direct response to a malnutrition problem. What is normally perceived as malnourishment? We have been conditioned to associate malnourishment to large posters portraying hungry and sick African children in desolate conditions of drought and famine. It misleads us to concluding that people with flesh on their bones are healthy. People with some fat are not always that physically fit. Being fleshy does not always mean being healthy or sick. But the obese is definitely malnourished. Nutrition normally goes hand in hand with physical fitness. Some people may strictly maintain “proper nutrition” on their diet but absence of regular physical fitness activities can cause fat to overtake them. Our body should burn enough of our calorie input so we may not accumulate too much cholesterol. Although needed by the body as a component of cell membranes, too much cholesterol deposit tends to block blood vessels leading to the development of hypertension. It could lead to cardiac arrest if left unchecked and untreated. Dieticians and nutritionists study balanced food intake for proper nutrition. They know that each individual is unique as far as nutritional needs are concerned. When they design a diet and nutrition program for a patient, they take into account his lifestyle and physical exercise regimen. Stress has a strange way of affecting a person’s behaviours and responses to food and nutrition. Some people turn to food to relieve themselves of stress. It results in malnutrition that becomes a seed for many types of nutrition-related ailments and problems. The unattractive appearance of people who chomp the wrong types of food in the wrong quantities is actually the first warning sign that compel them to seek professional help. If not attended to early, they tend to become used to the condition ignoring it until more serious ailments afflict them. Various religions maintain that the body is a temple of God. It is therefore advised for humans to honour God by taking care of the physical body and making it holy. We must be careful about what we do to our bodies including food intake and our other physical activities. If we believe in any God at all and fear Him, we will understand that malnutrition and the serious ailments it leads to must be a result of our violation of this precept. What do you think?
