School tours to the French Alps are usually associated with skiing, but you may find they can also be useful educational experiences. In fact, there are few better choices of destination for a science trip than this beautiful region. Whether you want your students to learn more about nature and geology, or are keen for them to pick up knowledge of nuclear science and physics, a France school trip is an excellent option. Although you may not plan to take to the slopes while you are away, it is well worth considering the ski resort of Chamonix Mont Blanc as a base. It is located in the heart of some stunning scenery and will give you the opportunity to teach your group about nature in a variety of unusual surroundings. Taking a cable car trip from the town to the top of Aiguille du Midi, some 12,605 ft up, will present you with the ideal backdrop for a class on geology and how mountains are formed. The views there include peaks in France, Italy and Switzerland, giving you plenty of examples to use. A journey on the Montenvers Railway, which runs from Chamonix to a station perched on the edge of the Mer de Glace - the longest glacier in France – will give you further teaching opportunities. As well as seeing the frozen mass up close, your students will be able to visit the famous grotto cut out of the ice and take a look at what is under the glacier's surface. Perhaps the highlight of your time away will come when you cross the border to visit CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, in Geneva, Switzerland. The facility has been in the news a lot recently because of the Large Hadron Collider and that is sure to have given some of your students renewed interest in science. The centre has excellent facilities for visitors in among the particle accelerators and detectors its researchers use to discover more about the fundamental laws of nature. Your party can look forward to seeing the spectacular Globe of Science and Innovation, together with the fascinating Universe of Particles display - something that is sure to leave them keen to find out more about physics. Make sure you also have time to see CERN's Microcosm exhibit, which uses games and simple experiments to demonstrate the equipment used by its researchers and some of the principles behind their work.
