Corporate social responsibility is big business nowadays. In order for businesses to benefit from any government initiatives and various other sources, they must ensure that they conduct business fairly and ethically. One company that manages their corporate social responsibility perfectly is Tom’s Shoes. For each pair of shoes that they sell, they give a pair of shoes away for free, to children in third world countries. Toms shoes, is the philanthropic apex of the footwear world, and a brand to which all others should aspire.

However, it is not simply their social aims that make Toms a leader of the pack; their entire collection is wonderfully fashionable and incredibly comfortable. The name Tom is a play on words and, rather than being the name of one of the founding fathers of the company, is in fact an abbreviation of the word ‘tomorrow’. They have used this concept to reflect two things. Firstly, that the world of tomorrow will be so much better if we all take responsibility in helping those people of the world that are less fortunate than ourselves – be that materially, physically, spiritually or mentally. Secondly, if reflects their avant-garde sense of fashion; their ability to be creative, trendy and innovative with their designs.

Most people, upon seeing a pair of Toms shoes, assume that they are based on the humble espadrille of the Pyrenees (Spanish or French side, nobody knows for sure, but many arguments arise over the issue). The espadrilles have a material upper with a thick cord sole. Toms do appear somewhat as espadrilles, except they have a rubber sole, rather than a cord sole. In fact, though, Toms are modelled on the alpargate shoes that are common in South America, Argentina in particular.

Alpargates are worn by farmers in Argentina because they are lightweight, durable and comfortable. Their rubber soles, as opposed to the cord sole, enables people to walk on a much more varied terrain than they are able to in a cord shoes – mountains, flats, beaches, muds, etc. none prove much of an issue. The reason that Toms have focused on this Argentinian shoe, is that they originally offered their free shoes to children in Argentina; today, though, their charity extends way beyond the scopes of South America.

Toms are one of the most popular brands of casual, fashionable, footwear on the market at present. If you stopped to look at the feet of the people in the street, we are certain that you will spot a few pairs of Toms. They are stylish and elegant and suit a very wide range of wardrobes. Clearly, they suit a more casual attire, but they look great with jeans, short skirts, long skirts, leggings and cropped trousers.

Regardless of your tastes, though, we are sure that you will love the collection of Toms. They come in a range of colours; some even sport a graphic print. Toms makes shoes for men, women and children – so no one need lose out on the opportunity to wear a pair of Toms.
