EHR/EMR systems are popular tools used in many large healthcare institutions today, such as hospitals. This technology aims to improve healthcare services and medical efficacy by providing them with faster means for storing and accessing medical records, as well as by eliminating medical errors commonly associated with the use of paper-based medical records. What is an EMR/EHR System? EMR, which stands for Electronic Medical Records, and EHR, which stands for Electronic Health Records, are computerized medical records which are commonly used within a healthcare institution which delivers faster means for storing, retrieving, and modifying of medical or health records. Though both EMR and EHR can be used interchangeably, emr software is different from ehr software system by several uses and functions. The EMR can, for example, be defined as the patient record created in hospitals and ambulatory environments, and which can serve as a data source for the EHR. It is important to note that an EHR is generated and maintained within an institution, such as a hospital, integrated delivery network, clinic, or physician office, to give patients, physicians and other health care providers, employers, and payers or insurers access to a patient's medical records across facilities. Advantages of using EMR and EHR Software Other than its use for easy and convenient storage, retrieval, and modification of medical or health records, both EMR/EHR systems are known for a number of other uses, making these tools essential for larger healthcare institutions. Such advantages include: Avoiding Medical Errors One reason why EMR/EHR systems are highly recommended, particularly for larger healthcare institutions, is because the system had almost, if not completely, eliminated most medical errors associated with the use of paper-based medical records. Handwritten paper medical records can be associated with poor legibility, which can contribute to medical errors. Electronic records help with the standardization of forms, terminology and abbreviations, and data input. Digitization of forms facilitates the collection of data for epidemiology and clinical studies. Sharing of Medical Records Another important contribution of EMR/EHR systems is that it allowed for easy and convenient sharing of medical and health records. This includes the ease of sending a patient’s medical record from one institution, such as a hospital, to the other, as well as the ease of sharing medical records which can prove useful for diagnosing an illness or symptom. Cost Cutting In addition to its benefits for healthcare providers, another important factor that made EMR/EHR systems important is that larger healthcare institutions can save more rather than expanding their storage facilities to house all their medical records.
