Cycling in Portugal is a great way to discover this beautiful country - and indeed there is much to see. Among the nation's gems is the spectacular Aveiro Lagoon, which is home to a wealth of birdlife - but what exactly is it about the lagoon that makes it ideal for cycling breaks? Separated from the Atlantic Ocean by a sandy dune barrier, the lagoon offers some wonderful cycling opportunities. Rich in wildlife, it is a particularly excellent place to see exciting birds, such as red kites, griffon vultures and Bonelli's eagles, while its beautiful scenery makes it perfect for relaxing routes on two wheels. As well as being a picturesque location, this protected area is immensely important for several reasons. It is considered to be one of the few remaining pristine coastal marshes to be found anywhere in Europe, while it is also a central site for fishing and sourcing a much sought-after salt, fleur de sel. So, by choosing cycling holidays that take in the lagoon, you'll be able to explore a destination as culturally important as it is beautiful. Adding to its appeal is the fact that much of the cycling here is pancake flat and it can be included on routes that run along spectacular coastal paths and through Portugal's very own Venice. Family cycling holidays here can begin in Porto, the nation's wine capital. Wending your way to Furadouro, you will have the chance to admire some stunning scenery along your first trail. Begin by cycling past the quay - where you can stop off to sample some sumptuous port produced in local cellars - then pedal along the spectacular waterfront. The vistas along here are truly incredible, so expect this section of cycling to be one of the highlights of your trip. After spending some time sitting on the sand at Espinho, you will take a short train ride to Ovar and finish off the day's trail with a flat cycling route to Furadouro. Setting off once more the following morning, you can explore the sights, sounds and smells of Ovar's market, then pedal southwards to reach the Aveiro Lagoon. Today you can enjoy your first experience of this natural wonder and catch sight of some of the incredible birds that call it home. A brief train journey will complete the day's trip and place you in the heart of the city of Aveiro. The following day, you'll be free to explore this metropolis, which is known as Portugal's Venice. Unsurprisingly, given its name, it is laced with pretty canals, which you can travel down in gondola-style boats. Pedalling along the Averio Lagoon once more, you can visit the nation's oldest porcelain producer en route. Vista Alegre has a great museum packed with fascinating information, as well as a factory you can pop into before continuing your trail. Cross the lagoon and pedal through Vagueira, before enjoying a scenic route past strawberry fields to Mira. You'll have time to discover more of Mira the next day by following a picturesque path through an acacia forest, over pretty bridges and past tranquil lagoons. End the day by reclining on the soft sand of Mira's glorious beach. On the final day of your holiday, your tour operator will take you to the historic town of Coimbra. Back in the 12th century this was the nation's capital city, and its combination of leafy plazas and steep streets are a joy to explore. Among its attractions are fado bars - which are reminiscent of Spanish flamenco bars, markets - restaurants and excellent art collections.
