It can be difficult when you only have a few days available to go on holiday to choose where to visit. However, if you want to be sure of having a fun-filled experience, travel to one of the annual festivals in Europe so you can see the sights and join the celebrations. Every year there are dozens of amazing events that take place across the continent, each with its own unique attributes. In Spain alone, you could choose to go tomato-throwing at La Tomatina, running with bulls in Pamplona or join the carnival at Las Fallas. Other great occasions include St Patrick's Day in Ireland, Hogmanay in Scotland and Oktoberfest in Germany. However, one that may particularly appeal to you is Queen's Day, when the roads of Amsterdam are awash with orange as revellers take to the streets to celebrate Queen Beatrix's official birthday. On April 29th the party begins, with DJs filling the air with music and locals and visitors dancing together in the street. Often the revelry continues until dawn, although you may wish to get some sleep so you can experience some of the other attractions, from the bright firework display to the parade of carnival floats or procession of decorated canal boats. This is an amazing time to be in Amsterdam, as all the locals come together to raise a glass and toast the royal family. You should also check out the huge flea market that takes over the streets of the city. On Queen's Day the government doesn't charge vendors taxes on the goods they sell, so many take advantage of this to make some money on their pre-owned items. Whether you are in the park or strolling along the streets you will find stalls set up on everything from tables to blankets, so by looking closely you are sure to come across a bargain or two. Whatever treasure you uncover could be a great souvenir of your time in Amsterdam. Of course, there are also so many other things to see in Amsterdam, from the notorious red light district to the world famous Heineken Factory, which you can take a tour of while you are here. Make sure you pack something orange in your luggage, as this is the colour people wear when they join in the Queen's Day celebrations - with the event a national holiday in the Netherlands. You may even catch sight of the birthday girl herself - so be certain to include this lively occasion on your festival calendar this year.
