Though it was first used as to easily store, retrieve, and modify medical records, replacing the use of paper-based medical records, EMR and EHR systems had also improved medical practices by providing healthcare professionals and workers with decision support.
Easy Access to Medical Records One major advantage that made EMR/EHR systems important for the progression of medical practices is that these can offer easy and convenient access to different medical records, giving healthcare workers and professionals support in their decision making.
With the ease of sharing medical records through EMR/EHR systems, such as pain management emr, healthcare workers can easily tap into information which can be very useful in augmenting medical services and practices, such as in the diagnosis of a disease.
Avoiding Medical Errors According to many medical experts, another benefit that made EMR/EHR systems important is that it had almost, if not completely, eliminated medical errors commonly associated with the use of paper-based medical records.
Handwritten paper medical records can be associated with poor legibility, which can contribute to medical errors. Pre-printed forms, the standardization of abbreviations, and standards for penmanship were encouraged to improve reliability of paper medical records.
Electronic records help with the standardization of forms, terminology and abbreviations, and data input. Digitization of forms facilitates the collection of data for epidemiology and clinical studies.
Easy Sharing of Medical Records In accordance with the ease and convenient access to medical records, EMR/ ehr software also allow the sharing of medical records from one healthcare institution to the other. This makes it easier for healthcare workers to get hold of medical information which can improve their healthcare efficacy.
Cost-Cutting Another important factor that made EMR/EHR systems important is because it enables larger healthcare institutions to cut costs on storage facilities.
Because it is a standard in many countries, particularly in the US, that medical records are to be stored for 7 years, larger healthcare can save more if their medical records are digitized which can be easily stored in a digital storage space, such as in a hard disk drive, which can be easily stored within the institutions premises.
However, smaller healthcare institutions may not benefit for using EMR/EHR systems due to the fact that these systems may require professional help from IT administrators which can cost a lot rather than maintaining their own storage facilty.
