Folk music was secretly taught at conservatories hiding from the Soviet rule back during those times. Popular instruments played for this style of Armenian music are davul, kanun, oud (flute), shvi. kamacha and zurna. Traveling musicians are known as Ashoughs. Moving ahead with the recent times Armenian songs has been able to match up to the pace at which the world music is growing. The Armenian music has started to develop a blend of the new age music like for rock, jazz, pop and rap. Although the audience for this kind of music is limited, but is surely growing in number with each passing day.
