How to care for your motorcycle

Automotive
When you buy a motorcycle you want your investment to stay in the best possible condition. By carrying out basic maintenance, there is less chance that you will be left without a set of wheels when you really want to go for a ride on a warm summer's day.

So, just how can you ensure your bike is in the best condition possible? The main thing to do is carry out regular checks.

Just like you would with your car, you should inspect your tyres frequently to see if they need replacing. Should you be travelling at 60 mph down a winding country road and one of your tyres bursts, the consequences could be incredibly serious, both for you and your motorcycle.

Check that the pressure matches what it says in the manufacturers' handbook and that there are not visible signs of wear and tear. You might also want to measure the tread depth to make certain it is what it should be.

Before you set off, you may wish to find out what the oil level is, just like you would a car. If it is running low, you can top it up yourself, which you can also do with the brake fluid.

Indeed, ascertaining that the brakes are in a good working order is one of the most important aspects of motorcycle maintenance, so that they do not fail you when you need them most.

After any long ride, it is recommended you lubricate your bike chain, applying the oil when the metal is still hot so it gets good coverage. This will help ensure your bike rides smoothly.

As well as keeping an eye on your motorcycle, you can also stay safe by ensuring your biking wardrobe is up to date. If your jacket is feeling a bit worn or your gloves aren't gripping as well as they once were, it may be time for a replacement.

There are many brands out there, but Dainese might be a good choice as it is renowned for the high-quality protective clothing it produces, including jackets, trousers and one-piece suits.

While it is important to keep on top of motorcycle maintenance, you will also need to take it in for a professional service every now and again.

Check your manufacturer's handbook to see when this should be, but typically it will be after you have clocked up a set number of kilometres - say, 3,000 km.

If you tend to keep your motorcycle just to ride at the weekends during the summer, it is unlikely you will notch up this distance within a year, in which case you should consider taking it in for a check-up once every 12 months.

Take your time to choose the best garage to book your bike in at, as you want to be sure that your vehicle is in expert hands. You could take it to the dedicated dealership for your brand of motorbike, or to the place you bought it from.

In addition to having it serviced, you can also care for your motorcycle by taking it in for a check-up whenever you think there is a problem, rather than attempting to fix it yourself and potentially making it worse.

Most technicians will be able to carry out a detailed fault diagnosis and by ensuring you find a team that are up to date with the latest specifications for your make and model of bike, it shouldn't take them long to identify the problem.

P&H Motorcycles has been selling motorcycles and carrying out bike services for decades. Visit us today if you want to browse our Dainese range and pick up some new Dainese leathers.
