Finding destinations with plenty of variety is among the most important things when planning trips for schools. One location that certainly fits the bill is Normandy in northern France, where your students will be able to visit a host of cultural and historic attractions. It is also a practical choice and not only because it is easy to reach from the UK. In Chateau Du Baffy, Normandy has the perfect base for school tour parties. It depicts the background to the invasion, including the defeat of the Saxon forces led by King Harold at the Battle of Hastings. Normandy also has a special place in modern history, as it was the site of the D-Day landings on June 6th 1944, which marked the beginning of the end for the Nazi occupation of Western Europe and sparked a chain of events that led to victory for the Allies in World War II. History students will find lots of sites that remember those who died during the landings and detail the events of D-Day. You can begin with a walking tour of some of the beaches where Allied troops came ashore and then visit the war cemeteries - something that is sure to make an impression on everyone in your group. It is also well worth spending time at the Arromanches 360 cinema and Landing Museum, the Pegasus Bridge Museum and the Caen Memorial to learn more about some of the key moments of the second world war.
