What is an EMR? Electronic Medical Record, or EMR, is a system developed for use healthcare services. It is commonly used as a way for healthcare workers to easily and conveniently store, retrieve, and modify medical data or records, which is a huge improvement to the use of paper-based medical records.
However, there are other reasons in which EMR systems were developed for, such as for the improvement of medical services and efficacy. Here are some improvements that the use of EMR systems had implemented:
Lesser Occurrence of Medical Errors One advantage that made EMR systems, such as pain management emr and orthopedic emr, important is because it had significantly reduced the occurrence of medical errors, particularly those associated with the use of paper-based medical records.
According to many medical experts, handwritten paper medical records can be associated with poor legibility, which can contribute to medical errors. Pre-printed forms, the standardization of abbreviations, and standards for penmanship were encouraged to improve reliability of paper medical records. Electronic records, on the other hand, had significantly improved the standardization of forms, terminology and abbreviations, and data input, which had also lessen the occurrence of medical errors.
Improved Medical Services Another benefit that made EMR systems important is because of its improved quality of care. This is by providing healthcare workers with decision support system allowing them to have more options to approach a certain case.
According to medical experts, fast access to medical literature and current best practices in medicine are hypothesized to enable proliferation of ongoing improvements in healthcare efficacy.
Improved usage of EHR is achieved if the presentation on screen or on paper is not just longitudinal, but hierarchically ordered and layered. During compilation while hospitalization or ambulant serving of the patient, easing to get access on details is improved with browser capabilities applied to screen presentations also cross referring to the respective coding concepts ICD, DRG and medical procedures information.
Mobility Another important aspect of using EMR systems is its mobility, in which a digital medical record can be easily transported from one healthcare institution to another, which is unlike that of using paper-based records which would require courier services to quickly send a medical record to another healthcare institution.
The advantage of this collection information is that it allows easier sharing of medical records, allowing different hospitals to gain access to different medical cases, approaches, and treatments for use of different healthcare professionals.
