Cataract Short Term and Long Term Treatment and Cure

Health
There was a time when those who suffered from cataracts were forced to suffer the slow decline of their eyesight until finally losing it completely. Of course, that was quite some time ago, and in the intervening decades, a considerable amount of progress has been made in treating the eye condition. With no natural cure yet found, it is one of the most common eye conditions known, with people over the age of 55 facing a very strong likelihood of developing it. In fact, it is estimated that around two thirds of the 60 plus age group require a cataract operation procedure to restore their vision. Nevertheless, there are numerous treatments available before having surgery. With the knowledge that the cataract remains so common amongst the older generation, many eye consultants recommend their patients take certain steps to at least reduce the chances of the condition developing. Once the early signs are detected, there are other steps to take that will slow the rate of development down, but there is little doubt that eventually a surgical procedure will be required. And it is only through such procedures that the problem will finally be removed and therefore cured. There are several contributing factors offered up as to why this form of eye condition exists at all. It is believed that exposure to UV rays from the sun can have a major contributing role, with research carried out on airline pilots discovering they are three times more likely to develop the condition. Other factors include diabetes and kidney disease, and the long term use of steroids, either in medication or otherwise. Lifestyle related factors, such as heavy drinking and smoking, as well as high blood pressure and even genetics are also believed to contribute. But regardless of the contributory factors, the range of treatments remains the same, with the final choice only made following advice from a qualified and experienced consultant. Short Term Treatment The concept of short term care suggests that the treatment itself will last only a short period of time before the final cure will be necessary. Statistically, this refers to the adoption of eye glasses or contact lenses to counter the effects of worsening sight. The sight will generally begin to cloud over, creating a foggy vision that prevents objects being seen clearly. Colour also tends to fade and, in time, double vision and sensitivity to light also develops. By using prescription lenses in glasses, items either near or far can become clearer. The use of contact lenses has a similar result but, in both cases, they are only really effective in the early stages of the condition as the effects are only beginning to be experienced. Within a few years, they may become ineffective, though it depends on the speed at which the condition progresses. Long Term Treatment Even before symptoms are detected, consultants will recommend that their patients begin to take better care of themselves. This is when a change to lifestyle habits may be recommended. Some patients may be advised to reduce their intake of alcohol and smoking, if not quit both habits completely. The intake of vitamin supplements is also thought to slow down development. Vitamins A, C and E, all of which are antioxidants, are theoretically beneficial, though there is no evidence they make any conclusive difference. Otherwise, taking exercise and eating healthily are also recommended. Permanent Cure But even with any of the cataract treatments suggested above, the fact remains that surgery does await anyone who has developed the condition. This is not as bad a prospect as it seems, with the techniques and technologies employed amongst the most perfected and reliable in eye care. A cataract operation procedure involves removing the flawed lens and replacing it with a precision designed intraocular lens. A pocket is created, with ultrasound waves used to break up the clouded natural lens before it is removed. The new lens replaces it permanently, the pocket is closed back over and the eye takes only a short time to heal. All of this can be completed in around 20 minutes, and patients can return to work the next day, safe in the knowledge that they will never need to worry about cataracts again.
