Gardening can be a wonderfully relaxing hobby, but there are lots of hidden dangers that we tend to forget about when we are ‘in the moment’ of gardening. The more often we do certain activities the less we worry about potential dangers that we face when gardening. We tend to get so into what we are doing that we drop our guard, this leads to accidents happening. Here are just a few tips that you can follow to help avoid accidents in the garden. Most gardeners use a wide selection of gardening tools, some of which can be very dangerous. Most importantly, if you have children or grandchildren, make sure you store your gardening tools safely, just as you would with knives or scissors in the home. Keep sharp and heavy tools out of reach of children, for example in a locked shed. Many people use electric hedge trimmers, but there are different types that you can choose to ensure that you remain safe. There are some hedge trimmers that will stop automatically if dropped whilst others have guards attached to stop any twigs from hitting the face or eyes. You can also wear special goggles when trimming to avoid eye injury and ensure that you always wear gloves when gardening. If you have water in your garden then make sure it is kept well away from any electrics. For example garden lighting or electrical tools. However you can get special lighting that is designed to be used in water features which is completely safe and will add a real element of drama to your garden. If you have decking near a water feature then be aware that your decking can be slippery when it gets wet so watch out for the safety of older family members and warn children not to run around. Believe it or not some people take huge risks when mowing their lawn. For example there have been reported cases of people losing their toes after mowing the lawn in their bare feet or losing their fingers when they try to unblock their mower when it is still plugged in. Always be aware that your mower contains sharp, fast moving parts and so should be treated with care at all times. Many lawn care liquids contain chemicals so keep containers out of the reach from children and if you have any pets keep them away from your lawn for about an hour after you have used it. Lastly, think about the plants that you have in your garden. Some popular plants, such as fox gloves, can be highly poisonous, so if you have young children make sure you keep an eye on them when they play outside. Gardening Lawn Care
