There are few things more satisfying than adding extra flair to your meals with some home grown herbs. Growing herbs is so easy and you need very little space to do it. If you have a garden then you only need to dedicate a small portion of it to growing herbs. In a small one foot by one foot patch you could grow six or eight different varieties of herbs that will add that depth of flavour to your cooking. Some of the easiest and most popular herbs to grow include basil, parsley and mint. They don’t require an awful lot of care and grow quickly which means you’ll be able to trim them as often as you like. Mint has always been popular in the UK and can be used in sweet or savory dishes and can also be added to those summer drinks. Mint is also great to use in drawers or wardrobes to keep your clothes smelling fresh. It’s a great alternative to lavender which some people can find too heavy. Basil has become a lot more popular over the last decade thanks in part to the rise of cooking shows and celebrity chefs. Many of us use basil regularly in savory dishes but did you know that it’s now being utilized in sweet foods as well. One dish that started in the more avant garde restaurants but is now filtering down into every day recipe books is basil ice cream. It’s a bit of an acquired taste but it’s worth remembering that with your won supply of abundant basil you can put as much of it as you want into anything you want. If you don’t have a garden then you can just as easily grow herbs in a window box or on a balcony. Remember that plants kept indoors will need to be watered regularly, but this doesn’t have to be a strenuous gardening task. Keeping a herb box in your kitchen not only looks attractive but it will also make your room smell wonderful. If you want something a little bit different then why not try some more unusual herbs such as marjoram, Angelica, Costmary or borage. You could also try growing Asian herbs like lemongrass which are used more and more to flavour food in the UK as British people grow to love Thai, Indian and Chinese food more and more.
