When we are designing a website we should be careful to pay attention to each and every detail of the website, no matter how small or unimportant they seem to be, in order to get the most juice out of it. A good website is one which achieves the goals which led to its creation. Here are the 5 rules which will help to create a flawless website: 1) Splash Pages: Stay away from them. Many web sites have a splash page; it’s a page with beautiful animation, flash, pictures or simply flashy text on it with a small “Enter” button hidden in some corner. It’s the landing page of the website and the visitor has to click on some text or button to go to the actual home page. But these splash pages are useless as they don’t serve any purpose and anyway why give your visitor a chance to go away without even seeing your homepage. 2) Avoid too much banner advertisement. Most of the internet users, even the one who can be termed as internet illiterate, don’t even give a fleeting glance to the advertisement area of a website. So, why not use the precious viewable area of the page to show something interesting to the users? It could be links to similar articles, or something which compels the users to buy products themselves instead of feeling being forced into buying. 3) The website should have a simple interface and easy to navigate. Not all people coming to your website are pro’s in internet usage and if they are faced with complex navigation with lots and lots of menus with hundreds of sub-menus, it will scare the day lights out of them and you will never see them return to your website. Keep the website design simple so that even a toddler can navigate it and see the popularity of the website soar. 4) Do not make the user feel lost. It may happen that the user liked the site and dived deep into it and when he wanted to go to a particular section from there, he had no clue about on which page he was or had been and how to navigate to the relevant section. Always provide a link to the Home Page from every page of the site, provide the Back and Forward option and make sure that there are no orphan pages. 5) Audio on your website? Get rid of them right away. One of the biggest turn-off’s for a customer is an audio track which keeps on playing in the back ground. Which normal person can concentrate on work at hand with an audio track pounding on your senses every second of his stay on the website? But if you are from one of the lot who insist on having audio on the website, give the customer an option to mute the audio at the very least.
