As medical practices continuously evolve, different technologies had been introduced to further augment and improve modern medical practices. A popular example of such technology is the use of EMR and EHR systems. So what is an EMR or an EHR? What are the advantages and benefits can these systems offer to improve medical practices? What is an EMR/EHR? EMR or Electronic Medical Record, and EHR or Electronic Health Record, are technologies developed and introduced to improve medical practices and processes such as by making it easier and faster for healthcare professionals and workers to store, retrieve, and modify medical records. EMR/EHR systems are used to replace the use of paper-based medical records, allowing healthcare institutions to cut-costs on storage facilities, which are used to store all their paper-based medical records for 7 years, which is a standard procedure in the US for storing medical records. Difference between EMR and EHR The terms EMR and EHR are often used interchangeably, although a difference between them can be defined. The EMR can be defined as the legal patient record created in hospitals and ambulatory environments that is the data source for the EHR. Benefits of EMR/EHR But other than just for storage, the use of EMR and ehr software had also improved other aspects of medical practices, such as the improvement of healthcare efficacy. Improved Healthcare Services The implementation of electronic health records can help lessen patient sufferance due to medical errors and the inability of analysts to assess quality. Information Technology is being used today to automate day-to-day processes, thus helping to reduce administration costs which then in turn can free up time and money for patient care. EHR systems can help reduce medical errors by providing healthcare workers with decision support, such as by giving them fast access to medical literature and current best practices in medicine. Another advantage of using EMR/EHR systems, such as pain management emr, is with that it had complete eliminated medical errors commonly associated with the use of paper-based medical records. Handwritten paper medical records can be associated with poor legibility, which can contribute to medical errors. Electronic records help with the standardization of forms, terminology and abbreviations, and data input. Digitization of forms facilitates the collection of data for epidemiology and clinical studies.
