Squats, deadlifts, presses, and pulls comprise basically all the exercises the human body can perform. Everything else is just a variation of them. Compound exercises such as these that utilize multiple muscle groups are the most effective way to achieve functional strength throughout the whole body. If these basic movements can’t be performed with proper form through a full range of motion and exerting a considerable amount of relative force, the body is simply ill prepared to do anything else.
