Disaster recovery is a set of actions that should result in the best possible preparation for recovery of all the functions of an organization after a disaster. It is based on implementation of procedures and preventive actions. Disaster recovery is a part of a large-scale process of business continuity plan and this is why all the plans concerning disaster recovery should take into consideration the business continuity plan carried out by that organization. Business continuity aims at providing the company with the best support and tools not only to achieve the continuity of operations and processes of the organization in the event of a disruptive factors, but it mainly focuses on maintaining smooth running of the business processes that is rarely threatened by unexpected disasters daily. However, it is the disaster recovery that should provide solutions and support systems to protect the company against all types of disasters, natural as well as the ones caused by the human factors, e.g. errors, infrastructure failure or sabotage. The strategies should foresee, prevent and, in the case of the event already taking place – detect it and then restore the threatened assets immediately. Disaster recovery focuses on the recovery of IT infrastructure and involve significant investments in order to ensure minimal losses after such disruptive events. The strategies for disaster recovery include providing the company with a reliable IT infrastructure such as backup computer centers, data centers and telecommunication networks, fire and UPS (uninterruptible power supply) systems. The company should also implement a system which makes backups on tapes, off-site d and on-site disks. The process of disaster recovery should be meticulously planned and prepared since such recovery is crucial for the long-term survival and successes of an organisation.
