Effective Methods For Improving Your Indoor Air Quality

Environment,Health,Home Improvement
Most people are under the impression that pollution is a problem that does not directly affect them, and improving indoor air quality in their own home is one of the last things on their mind. Poor indoor air quality can lead to a whole range of problems with hygiene, and quickly become a medium to high degree of ill health, then progress to a much more serious health risk to those who don't take notice and preventative action.

There are many ways toimprove indoor air quality which has been polluted by various means, such as dust mites in mattresses, furniture and carpets. Fumes from fresh coats of paint on your walls, mould, chemicals from perfume, household cleaning products and fumes that creep into your home from living in a traffic environment. Most at risk include young children, the elderly and obviously asthma and allergy sufferers who have a terrible time, and they can tell straight away when they first walk into someone's house whether they have good indoor air quality or not.

Here are the best methods that are guaranteed to increase indoor air quality in your home and improve your general health. Wintertime being the coldest season of the year is when we keep the cold out by tightly closing windows, which results in negativeeffective indoor air quality. Air circulation is vital to the health of your home, so you have to allow this flow of air to 'circumnavigate' your house at least a few times a day, preferably on dry days with a low pollen level.

Indoor plants are great for the home environment and developing indoor air quality to maximise healthy air intake, and they are easy to maintain. A lot of plants flourish on the unhealthy toxic pollutants that can take over our homes, and this effect completely removes these harmful chemicals that can cause illness from your air space, so on average a few plants in every room could be a starter to building indoor air quality for your house. The best plants for this are English ivy, gerbera daisies, rubber plant, weeping fig and the Peace lily.

Domestic cleaning products, especially fragrant types can be a danger in the average household, for example, some air fresheners can be very harmful as they can emit VOC's or volatile organic compounds, and it is very difficult to tell which one is safe and the labels are also no help. Most of these fragrances are not natural substances at all, but made from petroleum compounds which can cause adverse effects on us. Try to use natural products because you will know there are no harmful chemicals in them, like lemon, baking soda and vinegar. If you insist on using chemical based cleaning products, then it's wise to ensure your home is regularly ventilated which is one of the best ways of improving indoor air quality at home.

Dust mites are enemy number one in all households and you will never get rid of them all, but there are a few methods to keeping their numbers down. Damp conditions equate to ever multiplying numbers of them and if you can control your home's humidity, then you can keep dust mite levels very low. Use your air conditioning system on regular intervals and keep your bathroom from getting steamed up by using an air extractor, eliminate dampness from your refrigerator and check your home all over for signs of leakage or dampness, no matter how small - fix it! Buy a dehumidifier to control humidity and you should set it to between 30 and 60% to create effective indoor air quality and provide a better standard of living.

Pets are great friends and fun to have around, but it can get a little messy sometimes at home and they have to be looked after, so they leave behind pet hairs and other debris on carpets and upholstery. Pet smells are also a problem that most people have an issue with at home that lead to poor indoor air quality but I have the best advice here for that.

The only way to get rid of these smells is to invest in a vacuum cleaner that uses a certain type of Active Air H.E.P.A filter, and these 'charcoal based cassettes type of filter' are only inbuilt in a few so you must lookout for them. Miele and Sebo sell them. This charcoal based material that trap your pets hair in the filter would normally start to smell from inside the normal vacuum cleaner. But vacuum cleaners with this charcoal active protection ensures that pet hairs are firstly trapped and then neutralized by this anti-bacterial method.
