So, you have grown your own seedlings or have bought them and you need to transplant them without damaging the stems or roots then don’t worry, in this post I aim to help all the gardening lovers. Your seedlings need to be planted as soon as they’re ready. The root growth can be checked by gently turning the plant upside down and turning it out of its pot. If the roots are visible and the rootball holds together well then it’s time to transplant. If you have grown your seedlings inside the house or a greenhouse then you will gradually have to introduce them to their new surroundings. You can do this by either moving them to a cooler part of the house or carrying them inside and outside of the house. Start by leaving them in outside for a short period of time but ensure they are sheltered from the sun and wind. Gradually give them more and more time over the week exposing them more to the weather. The soil should be damp but not too wet and should have been prepared beforehand. The temperature of the soil is also important. Broccoli tends not to mind but tomatoes and peppers could go into shock. The best way to overcome this is to plant your seedlings in warm soil. This can be after a morning of heat or even watering your soil with warm water. For the first, few days protect your seedlings from direct sunlight. If you can plant before light rain or cloud is forecast then even better. Gradually expose your seedlings to the sun until the settle in to their new surroundings. Dig a hole in the ground large enough for the rootball. Put the rootball in the hole and give it a generous watering. Fill the surrounding rootball with compost and pat firmly. There are a few fine points to take note of; Try to keep the soil level in the ground as the seedling had in the pot, this will help them to settle. This comes with the exception of tomatoes and peppers which can be planted as deep or as not as you like. Avoid burying leaves, pinch them off first. Finally, keep an eye on your seedlings, ensuring that they have enough water and protection from harsh weather conditions.
