Ensure your kitchen renovation is stress-free

Home Improvement
Planning a new kitchen does not have to be a stressful experience - instead it can be a fulfilling one. All you have to do is make sure that you plan everything carefully, so that by the time you are ready for the final piece of the jigsaw, such as vinyl flooring, everything has fallen into place.

In order to ensure you end up with the kitchen you want, it is vital you take care to prepare. This means thinking about what you want and don't want, working out the most practical layout, drawing up a detailed blueprint and finally considering the more aesthetic elements of your decor.

A renovation is a great chance for you to sort out any annoyances you have had to put up with in your home, or to get the features you have always wanted. For instance, if the one thing you desire in your new kitchen is space, you could save up for longer to fund an extension, or you might prefer to come up with a new layout that creates the illusion of it being larger.

Indeed, if you long for your kitchen to be bigger, you may like to make this a priority over splashing out a significant amount of cash on appliances and fittings. You could keep your old cupboards, fridge-freezer, washing machine and oven and use the money you save to build on to the room and make it bigger.

If you wish that it was lighter and brighter, you could put some of the budget towards having windows installed, or invest in a large set of patio doors to bring the outside in. These can also make a room seem bigger and when the weather is good, you can step outside and enjoy the experience of dining al fresco.

As well as considering what you want, think about what you need. Every home is different and you may find you use your kitchen for certain things that other households don't. For instance, you might love cooking but rarely actually eat in your kitchen, which means the space taken up with a dining table could be put to a more culinary use. Alternatively, you might like to create a dedicated area where you can use a computer or work, if you often find yourself catching up on a few last-minute tasks for the office in the evenings.

Never lose sight of your budget during this process and remember that all the little costs can mount up. You might feel as though you can easily afford a certain set of kitchen units, but this may not be the case once you add on the cost of installation. One way to save money is to have appliances fitted in the space of old ones, so you do not have to have electricity and water connections moved, which can be expensive.

Now you can start working on your new layout. Take a piece of graph paper and remember to use the metric system and mark measurements in millimetres, as this is what kitchen fitters and shops tend to use.

In terms of practicality, you want your layout to make using your kitchen as easy as possible. Whether you like to be able to prepare meals quickly and efficiently for your family, or you prefer to spend hours cooking up a storm, you need your plan to reflect this.

You should ensure you clearly mark any permanent features such as windows or the boiler on your grid, along with all electric sockets and water pipes. Now you should add the three main appliances - the fridge-freezer, oven and sink. The best way to arrange these is in a Golden Triangle, meaning they are an equal distance from each other.

Once all of these important points have been taken care of, you can move on to the more fun stuff. Begin by selecting your new cabinets and work surfaces. Remember, it's best to opt for something simple and hardwearing as this means the units will stand the test of time, and you can also redecorate as often as you want.

You should take the same approach to selecting your tiling and flooring and remember that it might be safest having these installed by a professional in order to get the best result.

Finally, you can think about what colour you would like the walls to be. You local painters are sure to be able to create a great look for your new kitchen and when the last stroke of paint is applied, you could find yourself thinking that this renovation has been anything but stressful.

Rated People is a useful service that can make finding tradesmen a breeze, whether you need local painters or kitchen fitters.

If you are embarking on a kitchen renovation, post your job online so you can get help with the project. There are bound to be tiling or vinyl flooring fitters in your area who can assist you.
