Construction work makes use of highly-skilled, skilled and semi-skilled labour. In the third world, even “unskilled” workers are taken in. The quality of finished product is affected in direct proportion to the quality of the material inputs and its workforce. This is evident in the kind and quality of infrastructure we find around us. Making comparisons, you logically come up with oftentimes correct theory of their construction history. In the construction industry or elsewhere, there are written and unwritten laws to follow. There are set standards based on proven practices and track records. But these standards are only guides that may or may not be followed. Whether we like it or not, there are construction companies that are devoid of conscience. Buildings or asphalt construction pavements, if done using substandard inputs – human or material resource – pose as risks to life and property. Accidents resulting from such dishonesty, fraud or just sheer negligence are subject to thorough investigation and wrongdoers are criminally charged including revocation of professional license as architects or engineers. They are not fit and are a disgrace to the profession. In some countries, however, such investigations drag until they are forgotten giving state prosecutors freedom to enjoy the bribes they received from the culprits. Very sad but true. In such countries, the victims are usually the poorest classes who cannot afford fighting the suspects in courts of law. Some resort to taking the law into their own hands but are promptly punished because of violating the human rights of the wrongdoing professional. Money talks, as we often generally say. It is puzzling how people can be so callous and conscienceless. These architects and engineers have been “educated”, usually in the better if not the best schools. Time and again have they been made to take and recite an oath to uphold ethics and the standards of the profession. But still it seems evil prevails. These unfortunate scenarios are so dark it tends to depress us but hey, these are a lower percentage as against the good ones. Look at how the majority of populations are not hit by these accidents. We only mention these gloomy scenarios as a precaution especially for aspiring architects and engineers. The law is there as a deterrent. If you are half your worth, you will not do anything that will intentionally harm your fellowman. The victim could be one from your family. Most countries uphold the rule of law and punish those who violate them.
