London, the resplendent capital of the United Kingdom has always been a focus for the arts, with many exceptional art galleries, museums and art-related institutions. The unmistakable Hayward Gallery, part of the renowned Southbank Centre is one of London’s well-known art galleries. Opened to the public in 1968, the gallery derives its name from the London County Council’s former leader, Sir Isaac Hayes. At one time the gallery was overseen by the Arts Council of Great Britain, but is now managed by the Southbank Centre. However the gallery remains the base of the programme of National Touring Exhibitions conducted by the Arts Council. The Hayward Gallery is considered to be a fine example of the somewhat controversial Brutalist architecture which received prominence in the 1960s. However the gallery is known to feature different kinds of visual art from all recognized periods, and has in the past featured artists such as masters of the calibre of Leonardo da Vinci and the French Impressionists. However in recent years the gallery has tended to focus on displays of contemporary modern art, which well complement the starkly powerful exterior structure of the imposing building. Hayward Gallery does not feature permanent collections and generally hosts three or four major exhibitions of contemporary and modern art every year. Recent subjects have included the work of such modern masters as Antony Gormley and Dan Flavin. However the gallery has also in recent times featured works belonging to the Arts Council Collection. The expansive main space of the gallery is used to present the major exhibitions hosted by the establishment. Meanwhile the Hayward Project Space is used to display the complementary shows which can frequently be viewed free of any charge. Visitor may also sample the fare at the industrial-themed café; this place, known simply as Concrete becomes a bar in the night hours. Unusual events relating to the temporary exhibitions may also be viewed from time to time.
