As a pioneering computer company, Dell has often been at the forefront of projects that have changed the way that people use their computers. Their current collaboration with law enforcement agencies has been to streamline and improve the systems that are used by investigators when dealing with computers that have been found at a crime scene, and may include vital information. With quicker analysis of data and smarter archives that can be searched, the work that has been carried out has been significant. The Dell digital forensics project is one that has been in the pipeline for some time, and has a range of ways in which it will be able to improve policing. One of the smartest features included in the system is the new way in which the archive can work. An ability to search through the information held in a more intelligent way will help to generate links between separate crimes that would previously have required a long trawl through case files or the fortunate guesswork of somebody that would have been familiar with both cases. In reality, this takes a lot of the luck out of the investigation, and makes it much easier to link crimes from the same perpetrator together. Another clever feature of the system is the Spektor program, which has an intuitive on-screen guide for the crime scene investigators, which will help them to disregard any information that is irrelevant and will be able to guide them much more quickly to the right parts of the computer which they really need to be looking at. By avoiding having to trawl through lots of irrelevant data, this will help them to get the computers back to the lab much more quickly, which means that the analysis of the computer information can begin much earlier in the investigative process. The reality of many crimes and the investigation of the criminals is that it will often be very critical to get things done quickly, and where historically the analysis of computer information and the process of getting the computers back to the lab would have been very laborious, Dell have made this process much quicker and easier. The practical result of this work is that investigators will be on to the criminals more quickly, and are more likely to stop further crimes from being committed by those whose computers have been confiscated and then investigated very quickly indeed.
